The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is the leading source of expertise in the field of transitional justice (TJ)– a set of methods that help societies deal with legacies. ICTJ has worked in more than 50 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and North Africa and the Middle East.

Since it was created in 2001, ICTJ has played a key role in strengthening the TJ field. The breadth of its expertise has given it a reputation for synthesizing knowledge across many different TJ initiatives, allowing it to provide empirically grounded advice on the range of options available to societies in transition.

ICTJ technical advice has been sought after by governments, domestic victims’ and human rights organizations, and international actors working to support post-conflict transformation.

ICTJ’s engagement in Tunisia began in February 2011, three weeks after the fall of the Ben Ali regime, with an assessment mission by the head of its MENA program.  Two months later, ICTJ organized a major, regional conference intended to provide more accurate information about TJ and how TJ methods could be fruitfully applied in the Tunisian context.

Mission

ICTJ assists societies confronting massive human rights abuses in order to promote accountability, to reveal the truth, to provide reparations, and to build trustworthy institutions. Committed to the vindication of victims’ rights and the promotion of gender justice, ICTJ provides experts technical advices, policy analysis, and comparative researches on transitional justice, including criminal prosecutions, reparations initiatives, truth seeking, preserving memory, and institutional reform.

Priorités

  • Gender Justice: transitional justice mechanisms are designed and implemented in ways that adequately address gender-based violence, its causes, and consequences, as well as secure the participation of its victims.
  • Truth and Memory: Emerging truth-seeking initiatives are strengthened by an understanding of established best practices as well as emerging ideas in the field, resulting in truth commissions that help to advance thinking in the field.
  • Criminal Justice: combat impunity for international crimes by strengthening domestic justice systems, and their capacity to investigate and prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and others in national courts.
  • Reparations: Reparation seek to recognize and address the harms suffered by victims of systematic human rights violations. ICTJ’s Reparative Justice program provides knowledge and comparative experience on reparations to victims' groups, civil society and policymakers worldwide.
