Job Purpose:
The Research Officer holds day to day responsibility for research and learning elements within delegated project(s), mainly capacity building activities in Algeria. S/he carries out Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) activities and research, prepares reports and delivers presentations in line with project requirements. S/he supports the Research Manager (RM) as required. The Research Officer will be mainly responsible for the M&E of the capacity building activities in Algeria. S/he might also contribute to M&E tools development and analysis in Tunisia and Libya where required. The Research Officer will also be responsible for the organisation of the R&L trips to Algeria.
Main Duties:
- Prepare M&E tools to evaluate and follow up capacity building activities (mainly training courses with partners in Algeria) in coordination with the management team.
- Analyze surveys’ results, prepare reports and present them to the management / production team.
- Share main research results with partners in Algeria.
- Prepare research reports for the donor.
- Conduct Research and Learning activities in Algeria (and possibly in Tunisia and Libya when required).
- Support the RM in the design and planning of both quantitative and qualitative research, including designing research tools and documents.
- Fieldwork coordination and logistics planning, including carrying out recruitment of research participants.
- Moderate Focus Group Discussions and conduct in-depth interviews as well as other qualitative methods.
- Data processing & analysis. In particular, undertake quantitative data analysis including cleaning and manipulating of large data sets in Excel, STATA or SPSS.
- With support from the RM, write research reports, presentations and other dissemination products in a range of formats to fulfill the requirements of media creative and production teams, donors and the media for development communities.
- Presentation of research reports to internal project team and external partners;
- Support commissioning of agencies for qualitative and quantitative research including negotiations on technical issues such as sampling and recruitment, analysis, field supervision, instrument development and administration and data analysis.
- Engage proactively and collaboratively with non-research staff in country offices and in London to support the development and use of research in the production of BBC Media Action’s creative outputs.
- Support, train and mentor local researchers and/or individuals working with partner organizations to develop their research skills.
- Support development of new business by writing research contributions to project and programme proposals, working with the North Africa projects team as well as colleagues in the UK.
