Youth have been at the heart of the many of the recent movements for political change in the
Middle East and North Africa (MENA). These movements include the dramatic revolutions in
places like Egypt and Tunisia, as well as less visible yet significant calls for reform in countries
like Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine. Young people’s involvement in the protests and
demonstrations has stemmed largely from their frustration with the existing institutions and
norms that have denied them economic and social opportunities and political voice.
