Human Rights Advisor for OMCT’s Asia Desk (eight months maternity replacement)
The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), the largest international coalition of nongovernmental organizations fighting against torture, summary executions, forced disappearances and all other forms of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, is currently seeking to recruit a Human Rights Advisor for its Asia desk.
Location: International Secretariat of the OMCT, Geneva, Switzerland.
Dates and duration: 1 April 2018 to 30 November 2018 (maternity replacement).
Responsibilities:
- Implement OMCT’s Convention against Torture Program in relation to Asia, including shadow reporting and follow-up reporting to the UN Committee against Torture (in particular with regard to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines);
- Organize and carry out fact finding and advocacy missions, draft reports and statements to the Universal Periodic Review, the Human Rights Council, and EU bodies;
- Support the Program Director of OMCT’s Convention against Torture Program in organizing, coordinating, and moderating NGO briefings before the Committee against Torture;
- Support partner civil society organizations in their engagement with the Committee against Torture, as well as in their engagement with other UN bodies such as the Human Rights Committee, the Human Rights Council, the Universal Periodic Review, and the Mandates of Special Rapporteurs;
- Provide conceptual and planning support for meetings and public events, such as Human Rights Council side events or briefings of the Committee against Torture;
- Represent the OMCT at national and international forums including the Committee against Torture and the Human Rights Council as well as at meetings and events by partners;
- Monitor and analyze legal and political developments, in particular law reform initiatives, relevant to the fight against torture in Asia, actively maintain relations with SOS Torture Network members in Asia and provide assistance upon request on legal opinions, amicus curiae briefs, letters to authorities, legal memos, briefing papers, press releases;
- Assist partner organizations in developing litigation and advocacy strategies for international institutions.
This position is a full time (100% ) position and will require some international travel.
The candidate needs to have the legal right to work in Switzerland or in the European Union.
