About ILF: 

The International Legal Foundation (ILF) (www.TheILF.org) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in New York. ILF was founded in 2001 and aims to help countries develop their criminal justice systems to provide effective, quality services for the poor. The ILF has offices in Afghanistan, Nepal, Palestine, Tunisia and Myanmar. ILF seeks to build the capacity of defense lawyers through intensive mentoring program, and to use its global expertise in legal aid and advocacy to develop effective, accessible and transparent legal aid systems and ensuring that everyone accused of a crime has access to a quality defense lawyer. 

The aim of ILF-Tunisia is to strengthen the Tunisian criminal legal aid system and support the provision of effective defense representation for all indigent persons arrested in Tunisia.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Provide quality interpretation from English to Arabic or from Arabic to English of legal discussions and meetings between ILF staff and/or international experts and volunteers, as well as interpretation of court proceedings, meetings with clients and on investigations, as needed 
  • Provide quality translation from English to Arabic and French or from Arabic and French to English of laws, legal applications, office correspondence, reports, proposals, presentations, trainings and other written documents produced by the ILF  
  • Maintain clear and organized files of all translated documents
  • Provide quality interpretation from English to Arabic or from Arabic to English at ILF hosted trainings, workshops and roundtables or for ILF staff presenting or participating in such events  
  • Attend meetings between or involving ILF-NY staff and/or international experts and local justice sector stakeholders and provide accurate and professional interpretation 
  • Accompany international staff and visitors during trips between different office locations and elsewhere, as required
  • Work closely with the Communications Officer on digital communications and platforms, including social media, email outreach, and bilingual documents. Provide summary reports on meetings, field visits and other activities as requested by the Communications Officer and other program staff
  • Provide language assistance for ILF research papers, ensuring two versions in Arabic and English. Assist in research, as needed, of documents and online sources 
  • Assist in narrative progress reports produced in English and Arabic, including biweekly, quarterly, and annual reports
  • Support program activity and event organization
  • Travel in greater Tunis and other governorates of the country, when necessary.

 

 Eligibility criteria: 

 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in English, Media, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Required experience: 3-5 years of relevant, professional experience in translation, interpretation, proofreading, or related fields.
  • Fluency in Arabic, English and French, both written and spoken.
  • Excellent writer, proofreader, and editor meeting tight deadlines and responding to emerging crises.
  • Tenacious follow-up and strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Ability to travel in Greater Tunis and other parts of the country, if necessary. 
  • Ability to work under pressure. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills, able to work in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to work independently.

 

This position is a pioneering endeavor in Tunisia and presents the opportunity to join an innovative team of legal aid human rights lawyers leading the field in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable and marginalized accused people in Tunisia.
