and Fact-Checking Training of Trainers (ToT) 

Internews Overview

Context 

Internews seeks to hire an experienced trainer to design and deliver two 3-day, (12 participants each) training of trainers (ToT) workshop focused on mis- and disinformation and fact-checking. The objective  is to train a geographically diverse set of media professionals involved in or interested in fact-checking  and to build a network of experienced local fact-checkers. These individuals will be able to support local  and regional efforts to combat mis-and disinformation offline and online 

Project background 

To support Tunisia’s inclusive and effective democratic transition, USAID is implementing the five-year  Tunisia Political Transitions Project (PTP). The PTP project is multifaceted and is designed to support key  electoral bodies, governing institutions, civic groups and the media lay a foundation for increased public  trust and inclusive participation in Tunisia’s democratic transition.  

A key component of the PTP project, implemented by Internews, focuses on better informing and  engaging Tunisian citizens, specifically vulnerable and underserved populations, in elections and political  processes through strengthening Tunisia’s media landscape and the capacities of its information  producers as well as raising the levels of awareness and media and information literacy amongst target  groups. 

Scope of work  

  • Conduct a needs assessment training through surveys and/or interviews with a sample of  potential trainees. 
  • Develop the ToT curriculum, including: 

o Learning objectives 

o Session plans 

o Presentations, case studies, activities, and handouts 

o Pre- and post-training assessments

  • Deliver two 3-day in-person ToT workshops for 12 participants
  • Employ effective adult learning methodologies including lectures, discussions, group work, and  hands-on practice. 
  • Evaluate participant learning and workshop effectiveness through assessments and feedback  surveys
  • Refine the curriculum as needed based on feedback and lessons learned. 
  • Provide copies of all final training materials including final report to Internews. 

The ToT curriculum should include, but is not limited to, the following topics: 

  • Types and sources of disinformation 
  • Motivations behind disinformation campaigns 
  • Impact of disinformation on individuals, communities, and democracy 
  • Critical thinking and media literacy skills 
  • Fact-checking principles, tools, and techniques 
  • Assessing source credibility and verifying content 
  • Identifying manipulated images, audio, and video 
  • Effective training techniques for adult learners 
  • Facilitation skills for leading disinformation/fact-checking workshops 
  • Developing training curricula and materials 
  • Trainee assessment approaches 

Trainer Qualifications & Experience 

  • Degree in a relevant field such as media studies, communications, education, or related 5+ years’ experience designing and delivering training for adults. 
  • Substantive expertise in critical thinking, media literacy, and fact-checking 
  • Previous experience training trainers 
  • Strong presentation, instructional design, and facilitation skills 
  • Ability to tailor training to different audiences 
  • Fluency in Arabic & French is mandatory, English is preferred.
