Project Summary

Search has launched a 24-month project called “National Peace Education Curriculum Initiative in Tunisia” with the goal of increasing resilience and positive normative values of Tunisian children and youth in their local, national, and global environment. The overall goal is supported by two specific objectives 1) Enable key stakeholders in the Ministry of Education (MoE) to develop a new Tunisian national peace education curriculum and pilot testing of sample curriculum materials, and 2) Increase student engagement with civil society and local municipalities in target delegations.

The National Peace Education Curriculum Initiative comes as a third stage following the two-year experience of the pilot peace education program implemented in Tunisia. The pilot consisted of a C/PVE project aiming at fostering the resilience of Tunisian children and youth vis-à-vis violent and extremist narratives. The project received considerable buy-in from the Ministry of Education (MoE), which was its most strategic partner. The results achieved through the pilot phases led the MoE to voice its interest in creating a locally owned national curriculum that would eventually be generalized to all Tunisian primary schools. This initiative thus seeks to develop a national peace education curriculum with the help of national and international experts in the fields of curriculum development, child psychology, M&E, pedagogy, etc. The project also includes a second component consisting of the creation of 15 peace clubs targeting a different age group (14-20 years) through sub-grants. The peace clubs will be the fruit of a collaboration between local CSOs (the sub-grantees) and local youth institutions such as youth centers. The aim of these clubs is to foster youth involvement in local decision-making processes while doing so in a constructive and non-violent manner.
