Established in April 1983, IRI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to advancing freedom and democracy worldwide by helping political parties to become more issue-based and responsive, assisting citizens to participate in government planning, and working to increase the role of marginalized groups in the political process – including women and youth. IRI maintains a 501(c)(3)-tax status in the United States and receives funding through grants from the U.S. State Department, U.S. Agency for International Development, the National Endowment for Democracy, a number of European foundations and aid agencies and other Western countries, and the United Nations. Less than one percent of IRI’s funding comes from private donations.
Position profile
General Description
The Program Coordinator will work closely with the Resident Program Director (Tunis) and Program Manager (DC) to implement programming that fosters collaboration among civil society organizations, community stakeholders, and citizens to enhance local governance and improve citizens’ lives. S/he will manage a complex workplan of events and activities, ensuring clear communication and collaboration with a range of stakeholders.
Reporting
The Program Coordinator will report directly to the Resident Program Director (RPD) and work closely with DC team.
Essential Duties
- Support the RPD in implementation of all program activities to foster collaboration among civil society, community stakeholders, and citizens
- Arrange logistics for program activities, including all logistics for organizing trainings, seminars and conferences.
- Track progress toward defined objectives, follow-up closely on progress of activities and outstanding issues, ensure timely and smooth implementation of the program and proactively communicate issues and opportunities to RPD.
- Prepare written notes of IRI activities and contribute to detailed activity reporting and weekly reports in consultation with the RPD.
- Assist in gathering, organizing and reporting Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) data, including activity sign-in sheets, questionnaires and narrative reports, among others.
- Support the Local Coordinator in the identification of program partners
- Maintain relationships with partner civil society organizations and support efforts to foster network and coalition building among them
- Travel as needed to implement and observe IRI activities
- Demonstrate excellent English, French and Arabic-language proficiency; translate reports and communication from Arabic or French to English or vice versa and provide translation of events and documents as needed.
- Monitor and observe political events and related activities and provide issue-specific reporting (media reporting).
- Ensure full compliance with IRI procedures, policies and rules.
- Exercise sound financial judgement in the selection and procurement of goods, services and vendors and in accordance with IRI procurement policies.
- Assist, as needed, in outreach to new or potential in-country partners as part of IRI’s development efforts.
- Perform any other tasks required by Supervisor.
Qualifications
- At least two years of professional experience in democratic governance and politics, preferably working directly with civil society organizations/NGOs, government, universities, or community groups.
- Undergraduate degree in political science, international relations or related field; Graduate degree preferred.
- Knowledge of the political, economic and social context of North Africa
- Demonstrated experience working with US Government funded projects and familiarity with USG regulations and processes.
- Experience with program management and operations.
- Professional fluency in English, French and Arabic required.
- Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
