Background:
The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) strengthens democracy around the globe through private enterprise and market-oriented reform. CIPE is one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy and an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since 1983, CIPE has worked with business leaders, policymakers, and civil society to build the institutions vital to a democratic society. CIPE’s key program areas include enterprise ecosystems, democratic governance, business advocacy, anti-corruption & ethics, and trade.
CIPE has worked with local partners in Tunisia since 2005. CIPE sees the economy as the issue that will decide whether Tunisia’s democracy succeeds. A fair and competitive market will deliver the prosperity citizens need, which in turn will contribute to stability and security, fuel innovation that will create jobs, restore citizen faith in government and foster civic participation, invigorating democracy even further. Furthermore, CIPE believes that Tunisia’s private sector can offer informed and pragmatic advice on economic reform to offer decision makers. Businessmen and women throughout the country live the realities of badly designed laws, faulty bureaucracy and corruption every day; they know exactly how – and why – Tunisia’s private sector is not growing as it must, and have specific ideas for improvements.
