Within the framework of its project on the promotion of think tank work in the Middle East and North Africa, including Tunisia, the German Council on Foreign Relations’ (DGAP) MENA Program aims to strengthen the scientific and technical capacities of civil society actors in the region and the EU who are engaged in research and policy analysis and advice. The project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
Applicants commit to participate in two four-day workshops, one in Berlin and one in Tunis. In between the two workshops, each participant will write a policy paper on an issue of their choice related to either security sector reform or socio-economic challenges in Tunisia (paper length: approx. 17.000-20.000 words, language: English). Selected applicants must submit a first draft (approx. 9000-12.000 words) latest three weeks prior to the first workshop in Berlin. Participants will receive guidance and feedback on their papers during the workshops and the main writing phase between mid-July and end of August 2017. The final version must be submitted before the second workshop in Tunis, during which all papers will be presented to the group and a selection of papers will be discussed with relevant Tunisian and European decision-makers.
The organizers will cover accommodation and provide for travel subsidies based on participants’ country of residence. For the workshop in Berlin: participants travelling from Tunisia can be provided with a subsidy of max. 400€, participants travelling from the EU can receive a subsidy of up to 200 €. For the workshop in Tunis: participants residing in Tunisia are eligible for a subsidy of max. 50€, participants travelling from the EU can be provided with a subsidy of up to 400€. Travel expenses will be reimbursed after the second workshop in Tunis.
