Position: Media &Communications Coordinator 

Reports to: Country Director  

Supervision of: n/a 

Duty station: Tunis- NRC Libya CO 

Travel: 30% to NRC field sites as required 

Project number: LYFX0000 +Hub code 30% 

Duration and type of contract: 12 months full-time

  1. Role and responsibilities 

The Media and Communications Coordinator will lead the development and implementation of NRC Libya’s Communications Strategy and support the communications of the Human Mobility Hub in close coordination  with all field teams and in support of advocacy priorities. This position will plan, coordinate and develop high  quality communications products for traditional media, social media, and programs communications in both  English and Arabic as appropriate. The Media and Communications Coordinator will also facilitate high levels  of engagement and ownership from program teams and the Human Mobility Hub, and build skills within the  team to develop quality communications products in line with NRC guidelines and compliance with donor  requirements. This position will be responsible for liaising with national and international media. 

Generic responsibilities 

  1. Support the development and implementation of NRC Libya’s and Human Mobility Hub Communications Strategy, based on the Country Advocacy Strategy and Hub strategy, and in line  with NRC’s Global Communications Strategy. 
  2. Work collaboratively with colleagues in Libya, the Human Mobility Hub and other NRC offices to  develop and monitor a communications action plan that reflects use of a variety of different  communications and media products (photos, videos, press releases, web stories, NRC Workplace,  case studies, , social media, infographics, videos etc).  
  3. Undertake regular travel to NRC program locations in Libya and North Africa to gather content  relating to NRC programs, and support program staff with communications-related activities. 4. Work with field colleagues to identify and tell stories of human interest in different formats according to NRC’s internal procedures and guidelines. 
  4. Work closely with media and communications colleagues at the regional and global levels to  develop, coordinate and publish communications materials. 
  5. Support all programs teams, as well as the Human Mobility Hub with the development of visibility  materials, ensuring these are developed in compliance with NRC and donor guidelines. 7. Create communication plans for donors that are in line with the strategy and serve different  content purposes, in collaboration with NRC’s grants and programs teams. 
  6. Participate in coordination mechanisms and forums as appropriate. 
  7. Liaise professionally and efficiently with national and international journalists. 
  1. Oversee NRC Libya’s social media outputs and manage feedback and complaints in coordination  with the Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator. 
  2. Develop communications-related tools, templates or SOPs as required. 
  3. Any other communications-related task as required or directed. 

Specific responsibilities  

These responsibilities shall be adapted to the particularities of the job location and context, phase of  operation, strategic focus and type of programme intervention. This section shall be revised whenever a  new employee is hired or the context changes significantly 

Develop a monthly action plan for media, comms and content products detailing support required Visit NRC field sites to collect communications materials, including photos, videos, and interviews for  internal and external visual and written use 

Coordinate the Human Mobility Hub’s social media engagement 

Upload quality photos, video, social media content and other materials on a weekly basis for use in  traditional and social media as well as NRC Workplace  

Design creative and newsworthy products that portray the humanitarian situation and needs in a manner  that is dignified and focuses on the capacity of people in Libya for individual agency, in line with NRC  guidelines. 

Respond to inquiries from national and international journalists and help facilitate interviews Provide training and on-the-job support to colleagues in field sites and remotelt to develop their skills in  communications, including taking quality photos and writing basic human interest studies Work efficiently with programs teams to develop visibility materials and other communications products that comply with NRC and donor guidelines 

Develop infographics or other visual materials as required 

Engage actively with NRC regional and global communications teams to generate ideas, polish materials  and ensure NRC’s communications are appropriate targeted  

Critical interfaces 

By interfaces, NRC means processes and projects that are interlinked with other departments/units or  persons. Relevant interfaces for this position are: 

  • Strategy and planning: Advocacy Manager, Human Mobility Hub Director, Regional Media and Communications team 
  • Content development: Area Manager, Project Managers, Coordinators and Grants Manager Capacity Building: All Field Teams 
  • International Communications products: Country Director, Human Mobility Hub Director, CC  Specialists and Project Managers 
  • Safety and movement: HSS and Logistic team 
  • Feedback and complaints: Monitoring and Evaluation team 
  1. Competencies

Generic professional competencies for this position

  • At least five years of INGO or equivalent experience working in media and communications  Relevant university degree and demonstrated skills in content gathering, storytelling, and  interviewing
  • Thorough knowledge and experience managing social media accounts  
  • Thorough knowledge and experience drafting material for traditional media Thorough knowledge and experience with photography and videography, including video editing Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups through training, mentoring and  other formal and non-formal methods 
  • High level English and Arabic language proficiency (speaking, reading, writing) Analytic and computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access) 

Context related skills, knowledge and experience (shall be adapted to the specific position):  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Strong experience of what makes a powerful story  
  • Strong work ethic and focus on results 
  • Strong organisational and team working skills 
  • Good ability to work independently, with remote management and engagement experience  Sensitivity and high levels of self-awareness

  • Strong Arabic writing skills, preferably native  
  • Knowledge of the NGO operations and the dynamics of the humanitarian sector is a plus Proven presentation, training and facilitation skills
