The Maghreb Economic Forum (MEF) is a Think-and-do-Tank. We aim to nurture a new generation of public intellectuals – scholars, policy experts, civil society, public and private leaders as well as journalists who could address major social, economic, and political challenges in ways that would engage the public at large — and to provide a set of blueprints for Tunisian renewal in an era of globalization and digitization. The initial challenge is to find the minds and foster the debates needed to guide Tunisian renewal in a period of profound, exhilarating and often threatening change.
This requires the combined efforts of the public, private, and civic sectors. MEF will provide a platform that will enable individuals and groups working on these solutions to drive different stages of change, from inspiration to implementation.
The MEF staff, fellows and board believe in the possibility of transformative change. For thousands of years Tunisia has repeatedly managed to reinvent its social, economic, and political systems in the face of sweeping changes at home and abroad, while still holding to the promise of an open, modern society. We believe that through the power of people, ideas, technology, and participatory democracy, we can and must renew ourselves again.

About the scheme

The scheme duration is of 1 year (March 2016/March 2017) and has 2 objectives:

  1. to provide an opportunity for motivated postgraduates to deepen their research and experience a fresh perspective on youth unemployment, as well as provide Tunisia with a new set of highly qualified and motivated junior intellectuals and
  2.  to build international networks with a shared passion for the deepest theoretical questions and pressing practical problems of unemployment.

The Maghreb Economic Forum is leading an ambitious new initiative to transform the Tunisian economy through the identification of opportunities to unlock growth, better governance and leadership development: the JobsForTunisia project. The project is dedicated to the renewal of Tunisian socio-economic politics, prosperity, and dialogue – in a manner adapted to the Digital Age. It consists of three  cycles in these sectors: agriculture, information technology (IT) and renewable energy and three  themes: Employment, Education and Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). In each cycle MEF plans to organize three workshops in different Tunisian governorates and one (Policy Roundtable in Tunis.

The fellows will go on to join all three cycles.

The MEF Fellows will conduct research, engage with departments and colleagues at the MEF, deliver reports and join an international community in Germany during a study trip in August 2016 to visit researchers, policymakers and entrepreneurs to synthesize their learning at the MEF as well as further address questions and ideas arising from the workshops and roundtables.

MEF Fellows will provide reports based on their participation of at least one  workshop and one roundtable for each cycle. All the reports will be published on the MEF website. Fellows will travel to Germany in August 2016 and they must provide a report based on this Study Tour. The top three  Fellows will be given a space to speak at the MEF Final Conference in November 2016.
