Project: Countering Youth Radicalization in Tunisia through Inclusion.

Job Purpose

The junior researcher’s work will be primarily concentrated on the project “Countering Youth Radicalization in Tunisia through Inclusion”, a three-year research project financed by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). This project will develop innovative approaches for radicalization prevention and de-radicalization by analyzing the relation between experiences of exclusion and female and male youth’s susceptibility to extremism. Research results will provide evidence for decision-makers that gender and social inclusion are key factors for reengaging millennials whose feelings of injustice are being exploited by anti-system extremists. In the pursuit of transformative impact, research findings will be translated into policy recommendations for revisiting the national counter-terrorism strategy. These recommendations will be embedded into MEF’s advocacy efforts to promote innovation policies, build coalitions among practitioners and decision-makers and develop reliable networks in this security-relevant research field. Within the agreed research strategy, the Junior Researcher will ensure the practical integration between the elements of planning and implementing research, advocacy, communications, budget control, financial reporting and general administration of all research related activities. The Junior Researcher may be expected to support and share his expertise with regard to other programs, projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate and contribute to the formulation of the project’s research strategy, methodology and work plan, and help ensure its effective implementation of all research related activities (including expert workshops, field trips, focus-group interviews and annual conferences).
• With the support of MEF researcher and research assistant, consultants and external fellows, plan, coordinate and produce research outcomes such as background notes, policy briefs, recommendations, peer-review articles, op-eds and infographics.
• In close coordination with the Executive Director and the research team, contribute to the narrative report, budget control and the financial reporting to IDRC.
• Monitor and supervise the Risk and Ethics Management Strategy for the field research.
• Supervise the conduction of anonymized in-depth interviews and focus groups with both youth at risk for radicalization as well as with former members of the extremist milieu and monitor the analyses of the collected data.
• Contribute to policy development and follow relevant discussions within and debates outside MEF and represent MEF externally as required.
• With the help of the MEF researchers, identify and liaise with relevant external contacts, strengthen and expand the research program’s policy and advocacy network and mentor the research team in the development of a contact database.
• Coordinate the formulation of advocacy, outreach and communications methods and measures related to the research projects and ensure effective cooperation with the MEF’s Director of Communication, the responsible officers from IDRC as well as external partners.
• Contribute to building a reliable network of free-lance contributors (primarily in Tunisia but also in other Maghreb countries, Europe, and the United State) with expertise on specific topics related to the main subjects to be monitored.
• Provide ideas and supervise the measuring, tracking and reporting the impact of MEF’s research work for both senior management/the board and external donors/stakeholders.
