Twiza is a horizontally run collective that believe art and culture are great tools to create a better world
We have been running a space in the old Medina of Tunis and trying to encourage creativity, freedom of expression and artistic production through skill sharing and learning by doing. In the last year we have organised many workshops (screen printing, darkroom, theatre, belly dance, music, juggling, drawing, calligraphy, etc.), art exhibitions, language lessons, film screenings, dinners, gigs and parties.
We are going to make an open call to invite film directors both from Tunisia and elsewhere to use the Medina of Tunis as their set and make a film in one week also involving some of the local people. At the end of the week all the films will be screened and two of them will receive a prize.
Shooting films in the Medina will be a great way to promote this neighbourhood which is quite poor and deprived while being very beautiful at the same time. Community ties are very strong: people in the neighbourhood know each other well and spend a lot of time out in the streets. It feels as if there are a lot of interest stories about the Medina waiting to be narrated.
You will get our eternal gratitude and the opportunity to discover the wonderful Medina of Tunis through the films that will be produced for the festival.
You can also chose between our wonderful bags, T-shirts or DVDs with the films of the festival.
After the Revolution, Tunis has become a very lively place and young people are eager to express themselves through different creative media, even if there is still a general lack of spaces and support for cultural events and creativity.
In this context Twiza tries not only to encourage the locals to experiment with different approaches to artistic production but also to attract international artists to come and start an exchange of ideas.
In the past we have organised several film screenings and video workshops (first video workshop at Twiza)
In addition we have hosted an English artist, Kimbal Bumstead, who spent a few months in the Medina. A part form producing a short film, he did some workshops to encourage the local people to talk about their dreams and draw a personal map of the medina while walking around (Kimbal recidence at Twiza). We are sure that the film festival will attract people from different backgrounds to collaborate with locals, and to overcome the false image of the medina as a dangerous and intimidating area.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference! Besides any dollar you donate will be doubled thanks to Zoomal.
