Context
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an international cooperation organization for sustainable development with activities around the world. GIZ mainly implements technical cooperation projects of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It offers viable and forward-looking solutions for political, economic, ecological and social development in a globalized world. Working under difficult conditions, GIZ supports complex processes of change. The objective is to improve the living conditions of the populations through sustainable development. Tunisia is a partner country for German development cooperation. Since 1975, GIZ has been present in Tunisia. It carries out projects there within the framework of the Tunisian-German Technical Cooperation.
Since 2011, GIZ has been carrying out projects in Libya. As a follow-up to the temporary relocation of the GIZ Libya Office in Tunis, the management of these projects is carried out from Tunisia. In this context, the “Support to municipalities as a contribution to peacebuilding in Libya (SML 3)” project is looking for an intern to be based in Tunis.
The intern will support the program “Support to Municipalities in Libya” (third phase), financed by the German Federal Ministry for Development and Economic Cooperation (BMZ) and the European Union (EU) across the different thematic areas. These include decentralization and local governance, as well as local service provision, local economic development and social participation.
Supporting in particular monitoring and evaluation, his/her core tasks include monthly updating of the different monitoring tools, conduct phone interviews with beneficiaries, assist in the development of progress reports to the BMZ and the EU and provide also assistance with other tasks that fall outside the regular routine. The intern will be part of the team in Tunis working remotely with the team in Libya. Therefore, he/she should have good intercultural competences and preferably knowledge about the Libyan context.
– Support in the 11 different thematic areas in its respective teams on the level of activity implementation (this includes communication, concept design, administrative tasks etc.); – Support in data collection, data analysis: Conduct phone follow-up surveys with beneficiaries
of the project’s human capacity development measures. This includes the preparation and documentation of the interview and subsequent aggregated reporting about the outcomes; – Support in report writing to the M&E team of the project and preparation of M&E presentations such as for steering committees, or meetings with Libyan partners. This may include translations tasks;
– Close coordination with technical colleagues in Libya and municipal coordinators across Libya;
– Regularly update M&E tools of the project. The intern shall follow-up with the respective partners to collect all the necessary data and enter the information into the project’s (mostly) excel-based tools;
– Support the M&E team with spontaneous requests, this may include translation of documents from English to Arabic and vice versa;
– Work closely together with the communication and visibility focal point of the project and support him in the development of communication material about the project highlighting its successes.
Qualifications
– Higher education: Bachelor’s degree in statistics, political sciences, economic sciences or comparable studies;
– Enrollment in a relevant master’s program.
Other knowledge or additional competences
– Very good knowledge of Microsoft Office tools especially Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint;
– Fluency in English and Arabic. This includes the proficiency to write texts in Modern Standard Arabic as well as the capability to communicate with Libyan beneficiaries in colloquial Arabic;
– Knowledge of basics of monitoring and evaluation;
– Previous work experience with international organizations is an asset;
– Applicant should be a team-player;
– Willingness to meet deadlines and perform tasks under time pressure.

Please note that the internship is only possible if you are a student during the 2024-2025 academic year and can provide the following documents:
– Student card for the 2024-2025 academic year and / or registration certificate for the 2024- 2025 academic year.
– A copy of the internship request or regulations certified and signed by the higher education institution of the Intern.
