Internship Announcement 

GIZ Tunisia – Libya Cluster 

 

Context  

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an international cooperation  organization for sustainable development with activities around the world. GIZ mainly implements  technical cooperation projects of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development  (BMZ). It offers viable and forward-looking solutions for political, economic, ecological and social  development in a globalized world. Working under difficult conditions, GIZ supports complex processes  of change. The objective is to improve the living conditions of the populations through sustainable  development. Tunisia is a partner country for German development cooperation. Since 1975, GIZ has  been present in Tunisia. It carries out projects there within the framework of the Tunisian-German  Technical Cooperation.  

Since 2011, GIZ has been carrying out projects in Libya. As a follow-up to the temporary relocation of  the GIZ Libya Office in Tunis, the management of these projects is carried out from Tunisia.  In this context, the “Strengthening the Health System and Maternal and Newborn Health”  project is looking for an intern to be based in Tunis. 

  1. Responsibilities 

This project aims to improve the quality and availability of health services for women and vulnerable  groups in selected communities in Libya, with a focus on maternal and neonatal health. The intern will contribute to strengthening the capacities of the Libyan health system by supporting  operational research activities and data analysis related to maternal and newborn health services. Core  responsibilities include supporting collection, organization, and analysis of data to identify trends and  service gaps, synthesizing research findings into accessible formats, conducting literature reviews, and  assisting in event organization, logistics, and administrative tasks. The intern will be part of the team  in Tunis working remotely with the team in Libya. Therefore, he/she should have good intercultural  competences and preferably knowledge about the Libyan context. 

  1. Scope of tasks 
  • Conduct a market and stakeholder analysis: provide an updated overview of who is doing  what in the health sector in Libya, including key actors from the private sector, and align  findings with the project’s strategic objectives- health system and MNCH and SRH/Women’s  health. 
  • Support operations research by analysing data on maternal and newborn health to identify  trends and service gaps. 
  • Conduct literature reviews and desk research to benchmark project approaches against  regional or global best practices. 
  • Support in data collection, data analysis.
  • Support the project team with various administrative tasks, such as taking meeting minutes,  assisting with service procurement, and other related duties as needed. 
  • Support in the organization of project activities, workshops and any events 
  • Conduct phone follow-up surveys with beneficiaries of the project’s human capacity  development measure if needed.  
  • Support day-to-day operational functions 

Support with any other task as required 

  1. Qualifications, competences and required experience 

Qualifications  

  • Higher education: Bachelor’s degree in a field related to social sciences, political  sciences, economic sciences, administration, management, development studies or  comparable studies.  
  • Enrollment in a relevant master’s program  

Other knowledge or additional competences 

  • Strong research and analytical skills (e.g., conducting literature reviews, stakeholder  mapping, and data analysis), 
  • Experience or interest in health systems, maternal and newborn health (MNCH), and/or  sexual and reproductive health (SRH), women’s health  
  • Some familiarity with qualitative and quantitative data collection and interpretation, Excellent writing and documentation skills, 
  • Administrative and organizational competence (e.g., logistics, workshop support,  documentation), 
  • Basic understanding of Libyan health context or conflict-affected health systems is a plus. Very good knowledge of Microsoft Office tools especially Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint Fluency in English and Arabic (written and orally) is required  
  • Previous work experience with international organizations is an asset 
  • Applicant should be a team-player  
  • Willingness to meet deadlines and perform tasks under time pressure

Please note that the internship is only possible if you are a student during the 2024-2025 academic  year and can provide the following documents:  

Student card for the 2024-2025 academic year and / or registration certificate for the 2024- 2025 academic year.  

A copy of the internship request or regulations certified and signed by the higher education  institution of the Intern.
