The British Embassy in Tunis currently has a vacancy for a Deputy Communications Manager and Assistant Political Officer grade – A2 (L).

Main Purpose of the Job:

You will help manage the public profile of the British Embassy in Tunisia by building effective working relationships with journalists and media influencers to secure positive coverage for the embassy’s work. Your relationships will also inform your analysis of political, economic and social developments in Tunisia which you will report to the Ambassador, Political Officer and other senior readers in Tunis and London. You will work alongside others to deliver press events and communications campaigns while also providing administrative support to the Press and Political Affairs Team.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Form productive working relationships with journalists and influencers based in Tunisia in order to promote the UK and further our work on priority issues.
  • Analyse the Tunisian media to prepare daily media summary summaries to inform readers and present them to senior readers on a weekly basis.
  • Organise round-tables, public events, press conferences and marketing campaigns, which promote the work of the embassy.
  • Source value for money materials for the section including newspapers and magazines and creating requisitions to pay for goods and services as required.
  • Work with the Communications Manager on a calendar of upcoming events to ensure there is time to plan ahead to deliver maximum output.
  • Prepare and distribute embassy media announcements to local journalists.
  • Handle media enquiries and answer general enquiries via the embassy Facebook page
  • Contribute to corporate activities and the Embassy’s crisis preparedness.
  • Opportunity to take on distinct policy area – driving delivery of UK objectives,
  • Deputise for the Embassy’s Communication Manger and Political Officer.

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

  • At least one year of professional experience in communication or journalism.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how media function on national or local levels.
  • High standard of spoken and written English (IELTS score of at least 7 or equivalent)
  • Bilingual level of spoken and written French and Arabic
  • Ability to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication
  • Experience in productions of communications tools (written and multimedia);
  • Knowledge of social media management and digital communication
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Tunisia’s media scene
  • An interest in domestic and international politics and current affairs
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications and basic editing of photographs and videos
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently

  • Experience of communications and media campaigns
  • Experience of working in media or within international organisations

Working hours and remuneration:

The British Embassy in Tunisia offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. Initial salary will be TND 2,083 per month while on probation. Salary after probation is TND 2,579. This position is for a full-time employment, on a fixed-term contract for 1 year.

Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00 on Fridays. Due to the nature of work, you may be required to accompany the Ambassador and other diplomats on travel to different parts of Tunisia, which can involve early starts, late finishes or weekend travel. Likewise, there will be instances of some evening or weekend work where you may need to attend events. Where you need to do this you will be offered time off in lieu.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period. And the appointment will also be subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
