Job Description

Position Title: Communications Officer/Translator

Position Classification: Fixed Term – (Full Time), Tunisian, and CCN, and will be based in Tunis, Tunisia.

Project Overview: USAID Power Tunisia program seeks to advance self-reliance in Tunisia by strengthening the country’s institutional capacity to manage, operate, and maintain a modern, diversified and financially sound electricity system. The activity has three core objectives: 

  • Strengthening the energy sector’s performance
  • Diversifying and securing energy supply
  • Promoting advanced technology pilots and partnerships

 

Position Overview: The Communications Officer/Translator is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all internal and external project communications and online presence. This includes assisting with various communication activities, editing written and printed materials, translating documents from English to French/Arabic and vice versa, as well as organizing events and contributing to the management of the project website and social media platforms.

 

Detailed Responsibilities: The Communications Officer/Translator shall perform the following general functions:

  • Assist in the implementation of the Power Tunisia Communications Strategy under the guidance of the Communication Manager.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the development of internal and external communications materials, ensuring alignment with the project’s branding guidelines.
  • Write and edit content in English, French and Arabic for various types of materials, including website content, blogs, publications speeches, position papers, briefings, campaign narratives, etc. and ensure a consistent style and tone in all languages.
  • Collaborate with the Communication Manager to identify potential success story topics and assist in finalizing success stories in coordination with relevant team members.
  • Contribute to the development and expansion of the project’s online presence across various social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Collaborate with other project members to create engaging and informative content that resonates with the audience on these platforms.
  • Provide support in writing, copy-editing, and ensuring proper branding of project reports or deliverables as per the Branding & Marking guidelines.
  • Develop bilingual English/French materials for meetings, speeches, trainings, and events upon request. Collaborate with project team members to align translations with formatting, technical terminology, and style as per the project’s specific requirements.
  • Perform translations of the program outreach materials and technical documents, including grant agreements, subcontracts, program documents, reports and deliverables, between English, French and Arabic and ensuring that translations and interpretations accurately convey all information without any alterations or omissions, preserving the original meaning and tone in both languages.
  • Provide interpretation for events, meetings, trainings, and other pertinent discussions, ensuring smooth communication between English and French, as well as English and Arabic, when required.
  • Stay updated on USAID communications and branding regulations and assist in educating project team members on compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Communication Manager to manage and maintain the Power Tunisia project’s website.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating all PT events, both in-person and remote, including workshops, conferences, trainings, and external meetings.
  • Support media correspondence for all events and handle press releases in coordination with the Communication Manager.
  • Assist in any other duties assigned by the Communication Manager to support the overall communication efforts of the project.

 

The Communication Officer/Translator will work closely with the Communication Manager to ensure smooth execution of communication activities and maintain adherence to the project’s branding standards and USAID regulations.

Supervisor and Reporting Responsibilities: For all routine responsibilities and duties, either directly or indirectly related to the position description, the Employee shall report directly to, and be supervised by the position of the Communication Manager. The Employee’s Supervisor may change from time to time on an ad hoc or temporary basis depending on the needs of the Project.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or relevant field. Graduated from a French school is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years in Communications work, preferably within international development or similar context.
  • Prior experience translating documents from English to French/Arabic and vice versa. 
  • Demonstrates exceptional writing and verbal skills and ability to write, communicate, and prepare engagement materials fluently in French, English and Arabic.
  • Possesses strong expertise in social media management to effectively manage social media platforms, engaging the audience and fostering growth in the project’s online presence.
  • Experience organizing and implementing a wide range of events, including conferences, workshops, trainings, launch events, webinars, and more, both in-person and remotely.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Canva to create captivating and visually appealing communication materials.
  • Demonstrate photography and video skills, capturing high-quality images and videos for project-related content and events is preferred.
  • Experience working with the media including coordinating participation of members of the media in events, developing press releases, etc.
  • Prior experience on USAID or donor-funded projects is preferred.
  • Adherence to confidentiality and data protection requirements.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and ability to solve complex problems.
  • Foster a spirit of positivity and seamless collaboration within the team, promoting teamwork to collectively achieve project communication goals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced office environment
  • Experience working in similar context in North Africa/Middle East region.
