Mission and objectives

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With 195 members – 194 countries and the European Union, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide.

Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was established in 1945 and leads international efforts to defeat hunger. FAO supports countries in achieving food security, improving nutrition, promoting sustainable agriculture, and enhancing rural livelihoods through policy support, technical assistance, and partnerships. This volunteer assignment is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Tunisia, as part of an initiative implemented in partnership with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme to strengthen youth inclusion, with a particular focus on the inclusion of young persons with disabilities (2024–2026). Accordingly, applications from qualified young persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged. This UNV assignment is part of FAO Tunisia’s programme portfolio, which supports the Government of Tunisia in promoting sustainable agri-food systems, strengthening food security, enhancing climate resilience, sustainably managing natural resources, and fostering inclusive rural development. Through its work with farmers, local communities, producer organizations, local authorities, and development partners, FAO aims to improve rural livelihoods and strengthen the resilience and sustainability of agri-food systems.

Task description

“Under the direct supervision of the FAO Programme Officer, or his/her designated representative, the UN Volunteer will support the implementation of communication and visibility activities through the following areas of work: 1. Digital Content Creation * Develop and publish engaging content for FAO’s social media channels and other digital communication platforms. * Contribute to showcasing FAO’s projects, activities, and results through clear, audience-focused communication materials. 2. Social Media Management * Support the planning, scheduling, and day-to-day management of social media content. * Assist in monitoring social media performance by tracking key metrics and identifying opportunities to improve engagement and outreach. 3. Content Development and Storytelling * Draft success stories, news articles, and other communication materials highlighting project achievements and FAO’s impact. * Develop beneficiary-focused stories that demonstrate the positive outcomes of FAO’s interventions. 4. Multimedia Production * Create visual and multimedia communication products, including graphics, photographs, and short videos, to support communication campaigns and events. * Use digital and AI-powered tools to produce creative, high-quality, and accessible 5.communication materials tailored to different audiences and platforms. Event Organization and Communication Support Support for event organization and communication, including preparation of communication materials, participant management, logistical coordination, event coverage, and post-event follow-up.”

Skills and experience

• At least One (01) month up to One (01) year of professional work experience, at the national and/or international level, in digital communication, content creation, social media management, public relations, journalism, marketing, or other related fields, or other relevant programmes; skills and/or experience in Artificial intelligence, required experience working in the development sector an asset; • Good oral and written skills; Confirmed capacities in drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • University degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in Communication, Journalism, Digital Media, Digital Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Confirmed interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Sound security awareness; • Have demonstrated interest in food security, sustainable agriculture, rural development, climate resilience, and inclusive agrifood systems, as well as in volunteerism as a driver of sustainable development and the values and principles of the United Nations system.

Living conditions and remarks

1. Living Conditions Living conditions in Tunisia are highly appreciated and comparable to those in Mediterranean countries on the northern shore. The country enjoys a Mediterranean climate in almost all regions, with the exception of the south, which has a more arid climate. In addition to its mild climate and diverse landscapes, Tunisia has a rich cultural heritage, making it one of the most visited countries in the world. It is also renowned for its gastronomy and culinary traditions, shaped by a history spanning thousands of years. The country has a well-established healthcare system and a quality education system. It has the necessary infrastructure and amenities to ensure a satisfactory standard of living. The capital, Tunis, is relatively easy to navigate. Public transportation is available and affordable. Crime rates remain relatively low. As this is a National United Nations Volunteer assignment, the Volunteer is responsible for their own accommodation and essential living needs. 2. Conditions of Service for United Nations National Volunteers The contract is issued for the period specified in the assignment. Therefore, there is no guarantee of an extension or renewal of the assignment. Travel to the duty station, where applicable, as well as a settling-in grant, are provided when the duty station is located outside commuting distance from the place of recruitment. A monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is provided to cover accommodation, utilities, and basic living expenses. Life, health, and disability insurance is provided, including health insurance coverage for up to three eligible dependants, as well as a final repatriation grant, where applicable, and a resettlement allowance upon satisfactory completion of service. 3. Allowances 1) Before the Start of the Assignment Entry lump-sum allowance: USD 350 Resettlement allowance: USD 175 at the beginning and end of the assignment if the duty station is outside commuting distance, subject to UNV assessment. 2) During the Assignment Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA): TND 1,879.74 Learning and training: Access to UNV career development and learning resources. Annual leave: 2.5 days per month. Insurance: Comprehensive health, life, and malicious acts insurance coverage for the Volunteer, as well as health insurance for up to three eligible dependants (see the Conditions of Service for detailed eligibility criteria). 3) End of Assignment End-of-service allowance: USD 120 per month of service, payable upon satisfactory completion of the contract.
