Position Program Officer: Media Officer

Probable starting date: Immediately

Duration: 1 year-renewable

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is seeking a Media officer to implement its media outreach activities and branding of CIHRS image and initiatives towards the target audience.

Responsibilities

1. Coordinate the work of the media and communications unit and ensure that all relevant materials accompanying the online publication of CIHRS research and work are gathered in a timely manner and are posted to the appropriate webpages and social media channels;

2. Proofread, edit, format, and distribute press materials, such as press releases, reports and campaigning materials;

3. Distribute press materials, such as news releases and reports to media in the Arab region, Europe and the US;

4. Pitch story ideas to relevant journalists;

5. Respond to queries from journalists, editors, producers, and bookers;

6. Assist CIHRS Researchers and Advocates in planning and implementing media strategies in the Arab region and various capitals of the world;

7. Monitor media coverage;

8. Assist with preparation for press conferences, meetings, and special events;

9. Recruit and coordinate interns;

10. Assist in building and maintaining CIHRS’s global media contact database;

11. Help coordinate translations; and

12. Carry out other duties as required.

Critères d'éligibilité

  • University degree in journalism, development communication or other related fields, a Master’s degree is preferred, but relevant experience can substitute.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working in broadcast and/or online journalism and equivalent professional experience in communications. - or communications and media work with a human rights NGO;
  • Excellent proofreading skills in Arabic and English is required; proficiency in French is strongly preferred;
  • Good understanding of the political developments in the Arab region and how various social, economic and political issues affect the human rights conditions there;
  • Ability to work on own initiative to build on and develop the job, combined with the ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Experience working on wordpress, or publishing to a website, and proficiency in computer packages, including MS Office applications, are required.
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills and developed capacity for tact, diplomacy and negotiation;
  • Developed writing skills, able to write press releases, letters to the editor, country briefs, etc.;
  • Strong presentation skills;
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with the media, other civil society organizations, and networks;
  • Good program management skills, highly organized, with good attention to detail and developed ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet tight deadlines and organize work;
  • High sense of urgency and a well-developed work ethic.
