Archaeology has been defined as the place where the present and past meet and interact in the study of material evidence. Even though archaeologists often consider the various ways in which events affect the study of the past, nothing can prepare them for the time when current events – the seeming collision of the present and past – impact their ability to do fieldwork or even offer them a new responsibility.

• About the speaker:
Dr. Kane, Professor Emerita of Classical Archaeology at Oberlin College, holds an undergraduate degree from Barnard College and a doctorate from Bryn Mawr College. She has excavated in the US, UK, Greece, Tunisia, Yugoslavia, Libya, and Italy. She is Director of both the Sangro Valley Project (Abruzzo, Italy) and the Cyrenaica Archaeological Project (Cyrene, Libya). Her research interests include landscape archaeology, Greek and Roman sculpture, Italic architectural terracottas, and the study of white marble in the ancient Mediterranean. Since 2005, she has been involved in capacity building efforts for the Libyan Department of Antiquities. In 2013 she was awarded a Society for American Archaeology Presidential Award for her efforts in the preservation of Libyan heritage during NATO’s Operation Unified Protector.
