THE ORGANIZATION:

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent quasi-federal institution established and funded by the U.S. Congress to:

  • Prevent and resolve violent international conflict;
  • Promote post-conflict stability and development;
  • Increase peacebuilding capacity, tools, and intellectual capital.

The Institute accomplishes its mission through direct engagement in peacebuilding efforts around the world, and by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources.

SUMMARY

We seek a person to serve as the Regional Program Assistant to support the United States Institute of Peace Middle East and North Africa Program. The Regional Program Assistant (RPA) should be based in Tunis, Tunisia and able to travel throughout the MENA region as needed. The RPA provides high-level support for program management, planning, budget, administrative support, and monitoring; making substantive contributions to meeting program goals and objectives.

This program support position is supervised by the Director for MENA and requires an in-depth knowledge of business administration and program management processes, transitional peace-building, and of the region in general.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In summary, the RPA will:

  • Plan and support travel of Washington and regionally-based USIP staff to the MENA region, as well as make appointments and attend meetings.
  • Provide effective logistical and administrative support for the successful implementation of program projects and activities occurring throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
  • Ensure effective and meaningful coordination both internally among various USIP project teams, as well as externally with the US Embassy and other international actors.
  •  Prepare and disseminate timely reports to the MENA Program Management Team and to other entities as appropriate.  Update program database and documents as necessary to ensure the knowledge management of USIP’s programs.
  •  Perform other duties as assigned.

 The term contract for this position is through September 30, 2015, and is potentially renewable. Immediate or very near-term availability will be an important factor. Compensation will be commensurate with the background and experience of the selected candidate. Additional benefits may be possible.

This position is subject to the availability of funds. The initial term of the position will be determined subject to the availability of secured funding, and is eligible for renewals based on continued funding.

Critères d'éligibilité

  • You must be a Tunisian citizen or currently residing in Tunisia to be considered.
  • Ability to write and speak English and Arabic is required. Ability to write and speak French is also highly desirable. (Applicants with language ability should indicate their fluency levels). Applicants may be asked to provide writing samples to demonstrate English competency in reporting.
  • A Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) or equivalent experience in social sciences, humanities, or international relations/conflict management.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience related business or administrative experience to become familiar with general personnel practices, accounting and budgeting principles and coordination of major office activities.
  • Knowledge of the context, conflict analysis and management techniques, experience in program design, organizational development and project management, and excellent political analysis and reporting skills are important.
  • A background in working with networks and on facilitated dialogue programming is desirable but not required.
  • Creativity, excellent communications and analytical skills and the ability to operate with high levels of autonomy and responsibility in a fast-paced and transitional Knowledge of conflict resolution and conflict management.
  • Familiarity with budgets and experience in organizing conferences and meetings, making travel arrangements is preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently in complex and difficult situations.
  • Ability to manage tasks in transitional environments.
  • Excellent oral and writing communication skills, including the ability to deal with counterparts on both the lowest and highest political, social and economic levels;
  • Familiarity with U.S. Institute of Peace programs.
