ProjectTunisian Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) 2020
Partners:

  • German Watch
  • WWF North Africa
  • Climate Action Network Arab World
  • Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation Tunisia office
  • YOUNGO

Context:
A conference can only be called LCOY, if it is officially approved by YOUNGO and close communication and collaboration take place during the planning. The hub for this inclusion and collaborative work will be the LCOY WG of YOUNGO.
Generally speaking, there are two different formats of COY, which will take place next year:

  1. A Regional COY (ArabCOY)
  2. A National Local COYs

Project aims:
–       Capacity building of the youth from Tunisia regarding international Climate policies and climate change /energy issues
–        Exchanges on best practices on youth engagement in the country and networking possibilities
–        Raise the voice of the youth from Tunisia and integrate it in the international climate policy decision making and develop cooperation in the region and include the participation of vulnerable/isolated people in the country (women, local communities, and youth living in conflict areas…)
Target groups:
This project concerns Youth from Tunisian CSO. The main leading person is a woman and we are willing to ensure that 50% of the participants are women. We will encourage women empowerment local sessions before the regional one.
Date of the LCOY:
A two-day workshop from 02 to 05 October 2020.
Expected changes in policies:
L-COY serves primarily as a policy training session to prepare young people for the COP that follows the COYs. The participants are inducted into the various subjects under the climate change umbrella, where they develop common policy positions (lobbying points) and develop strategies to best advocate for the interests of youth in those policy areas.
Sharing knowledge lays the foundation for an expedient participation in political and social processes. During COY, many workshops and discussions focus on youth empowerment and on providing necessary scientific and political knowledge.
Recommendations from each national local COY will be gathered in the regional one.
A policy paper will be issued and shared with the UNFCCC Tunisian focal point. Moreover, we will take it to COP26, where we will share it in the World Youth. Then we will hand it out to Arab negotiators.
Expected impacts:
The very nature of L-COY will provide a brilliant space for young people coming together from many different regions in Tunisia to build new coalitions and networks for enhancing global climate actions and for various artwork and movement building. The event will gather 40Tunisian young leaders to develop discussions to build capacities and showcase local and regional solutions to tackle climate change and related issues. This will also help to:

  1. Contribute to understanding and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals related to climate change (SDGs 6; 7; 12; 13; 14 & 15)
  2. Showcase best practice projects by youth on climate change.
  3. Develop and publish a youth position paper ahead of COP

How to participate:
A call for participation will be launched to select 40 Tunisian youth working with and/or members of Tunisian CSO:
The selection process of the applicants will be based on the following criteria:

  • Experience on climate change and related themes
  • Leadership skills
  • Tunisian citizen , age between 20 and 35 years
