The Carter Center, a non-profit non-governmental organization, is seeking an experienced and  highly qualified translator/interpreter join its Tunis office team for an election observation mission  for the upcoming referendum and elections. 

Under the direct supervision of the Mission Director, the Translator/interpreter will fulfill the  following responsibilities: 

Primary responsibilities: 

  • Interpret (Arabic, English, French) as required;  
  • Translate written (Arabic, English, French) documents dealing with varied technical,  legal and election-related issues;  
  • Translate documents, correspondence and articles of a sensitive nature (Arabic or French)  to English and vice-versa;  
  • Prepare English summaries of elections news published in French and Arabic; 
  •  Accompany office personnel to meetings as required;  
  • Solicit bids and recommend individuals for translation of the preliminary statements,  interpreters for the leadership and company for the press conference; 
  • Interpret for the mission leaders during observation on election day; 
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned as needed. 

Qualifications: 

The ideal candidates will possess some or all the following qualifications: 

  • A minimum of three years’ experience doing translation and interpretation to/from English,  Arabic and French; 
  • Relevant University degree; 
  • Thorough knowledge of Tunisian politics and culture; 
  • Knowledge of legal and election terminology; 
  • Strong writing and communication skills; 
  • Ability to perform well under stress, work within a team, and maintain professionalism at  all times; 
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and French.

The Carter Center in Tunisia: Following its international election observation of 2011, The  Carter Center retained a presence in Tunisia to monitor the constitutional drafting process and  observe the legislative and presidential elections of 2014. The Center remains in Tunisia to monitor  the process of harmonizing existing domestic legislation and new legislation with the ideals of the  2014 constitution. Since then the Center has continued to work with Civil Society Organizations  on capacity building issues. In 2018, the Center held focus groups in partnership with CSOs. The  Center also strengthened the capacity and shared best practices with CSOs preparing to observe  the municipal elections. In 2019 the Carter Center fielded an international observation mission to  observe Tunisia’s early presidential and legislative elections. Currently the Center is conducting  projects on fact checking, women’s participation in civic life and transition monitoring.
