About Tawasol

Tawasol is a 24-month program which aims to create a more inclusive Tunisian society for marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented and vulnerable groups by countering discrimination and promoting greater diversity in media coverage.  This will be accomplished through three key objectives:  1) Counter mis- and disinformation as well as negative rhetoric targeting marginalized racial and ethnic communities, as well as refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants; 2) Strengthen the capacity of independent media outlets to investigate and develop fact-based, quality reporting on rights issues impacting marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented groups; and, 3) Support content development and community-based journalism by underrepresented and vulnerable communities on rights-related issues of community concern.

About the Bootcamp:

Under Tawasol’s objective 2: Strengthen the capacity of independent media outlets to develop fact-based, quality reporting on rights issues impacting marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented groups, Internews will conduct a tailored capacity building bootcamp that will focus on the skills needed by independent media outlets to raise public awareness and advocate for fact-based, high-quality reporting on issues affecting marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented groups, especially black Tunisians and Sub-Saharan migrants, Fact-checking, reporting on rights issues affecting marginalized communities, gender-sensitive reporting, and avoiding stereotypes will be among the topics covered. 5 bootcamps are projected to be held, and they will take place in Greater Tunis, Sfax, and the southern regions of Tunisia.

The trainer will be responsible of designing and delivering the intensive, customized, 4-day capacity building bootcamp for fact-based, quality reporting on rights issues impacting the target communities, as well as provide participants with ongoing mentorship.

The trainer is also expected to attend meetings with and receive feedback from the Internews Team as needed. 

The duration of the consultancy is thirty (30) days over the span of six months.

Scope of work 

Internews is seeking to hire a media trainer to carry out the 4-days bootcamp in collaboration with Internews. The consultant is expected to deliver, but not limited, the below tasks: 

  1. Conduct tailored training sessions during the bootcamp, addressing critical skills and knowledge necessary for fact-based, quality reporting on issues affecting marginalized communities, specifically tailored to address the concerns of black Tunisians and Sub-Saharan migrants. The design of the training sessions will be based on a reporting manual that Internews has developed for this activity
  2. Provide ongoing mentorship to participants to support skill application and content development.
  3. Support each media outlet in designing new content production related to the project’s target community.
  4. Oversee the pitch session at the end of the bootcamp.
  5. Provide copies of all final training materials including final report to Internews.
  6. Develop and conduct a pre-bootcamp and post-bootcamp assessment to understand the baseline knowledge and skills of participants related to fact-based, quality reporting and issues affecting marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented groups, especially black Tunisians, and Sub-Saharan migrants, and to measure changes in participants’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward the bootcamp’s theme.
  7. Develop and share evaluation forms with the participants to collect feedback on the relevance, clarity, and practicality of the content delivered.
  8. Provide a comprehensive a report summarizing the key findings, successes, challenges, and recommendations for future capacity-building initiatives to fact-based, quality reporting and/or issues affecting marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented groups, especially black Tunisians, and Sub-Saharan migrants.
  9. Provide regular progress reports to the Internews Team during the consultancy period.

Qualifications and experience required

  • Degree in a relevant field such as media studies, communications, education, or related.
  • 5+ years’ experience designing and delivering training for journalists and media actors.
  • Substantive expertise in critical thinking, media literacy, and fact-checking.
  • Strong presentation, instructional design, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to tailor training to different audiences.
  • Knowledge and field-level experience in working with media outlets are preferred. 
  • Fluency in Arabic & English is mandatory.
