Title: Tourism Marketing Research Intern  

 Length of Assignment: Short-Term 

Reports to: Marketing Team Leader 

1. BACKGROUND 

The USAID-funded Visit Tunisia Activity is a 5-year project designed to enhance Tunisia’s tourism  potential, with the goal of generating revenue and jobs, particularly for women and youth, and for  populations in underserved regions of the country. The overall vision behind USAID’s investment in  Tunisia’s tourism sector is to capitalize on Tunisia’s natural, cultural, heritage and historical sites to  develop a more diversified and high-quality tourism sector that contributes to broad-based economic  growth. Through this activity, USAID seeks to contribute to Tunisia’s growth and development to offset  the negative economic impact of the coronavirus crisis. The project will seek to achieve the following  four objectives: 

  • Objective 1: Enhance Tunisia’s competitiveness as a tourism destination;  
  • Objective 2: Increase tourism-related investments and revenue;  
  • Objective 3: Improve the enabling environment for sustained growth in the tourism sector; 
  • Objective 4: Private sector engagement to expand the offer and quality of alternative tourism.  

This project will collaborate with the relevant ministries, private sector, and donors to advance the  objectives while contributing to the following high-level results:  

  1. Increase in the number of tourists.  
  2. Increase in the number of jobs in the tourism sector.  
  3. Increase in tourism revenue.  
  4. Increase in private sector-led investment and innovation in the tourism sector. 

2. POSITION DESCRIPTION 

The Marketing Research Intern will support the Marketing Component in conducting research, collecting  data, performing data analysis and reporting through investigating tourism distribution and booking  channels in Tunisia. 

The Intern’s duties will include research, data collection, data analysis, communications support, content development and report preparation. The Intern will provide support to the Marketing team in the implementation of activities that will be agreed on a weekly basis and prioritized together with the  intern’s supervisor. 

Internship at the VISIT TUNISIA Project will provide the Intern with valuable exposure to a range of  tourism sales and marketing channels while working with an experienced team of tourism marketing  and international development professionals. 

  1. DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Internship position requires strong inter-personal, communication, and business skills to  complete the tasks associated with the position’s responsibilities, including those listed below: 

  • Developing a database of operators (international and Tunisian) currently selling Tunisia, as well  as a databased of ‘potentials’ (selling similar competing destinations) 
  • Researching the hotel and non-traditional lodging sector, identifying accommodation room  nights sold in Tunisia on an annual basis, and conducting analysis and compiling reports on  figures including: 
  • o number of total room nights sold by property type 
  • o split between online and offline room sales by property type 
  • o incidence of online bookers being converted to offline bookers 
  • Researching Online Travel Agent (OTA) platforms, their offerings, and market opportunities. Identifying international hotel operators with current and planned accommodation offerings  and their means of booking. 
  • Researching and identifying wholesalers distributing experiences for tour operator sellers for  online booking, including reviewing sales data available and data needs 
  • Conducting market research into online platforms and FinTech solutions best aligned/equipped  to support new tourism product/experience development for Tunisia  
  • Conducting an industry assessment of players in Tunisia’s start-up community engaged in the  online booking space and digital solutions for tourism  
  1. PERIOD OF INTERNSHIP  

This is a short-term internship position for three (3) months with the possibility of a three (3) month  extension. 

  1. LOCATION OF THE ASSIGNMENT  

This is a hybrid remote/office assignment based in Tunis. The intern will be required to attend the VISIT  TUNISIA office at least two days per week, except when workplace protocols direct otherwise. 

  1. SUPERVISION AND REPORTING  

The Intern will report to the Marketing Team Leader.  

  1. QUALIFICATIONS  

The Intern should possess the following range of qualifications and experiences:  • This opportunity is open to candidates pursuing a Bachelor or Masters degree in tourism  management, hospitality management, business administration, or a related field

  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills required. 

  • Fluent written and verbal English required.  
  • Strong research and analytical skills required.  
  • A passion for tourism management and/or marketing and/or entrepreneurship desired. 
  • • Experience working or interning with USAID projects or other donor entities desired.  
  1. COMPENSATION 

750TND/month
