Organizational Context:

Under the general guidance of the Associate Resettlement Officer and the direct supervision of the Resettlement Officer, the translator, performs an interpretation role in resettlement interviews. S/he will provide verbal / oral interpretation during interviews and translates documents written in Arabic to English or French.

S/he can also be asked to intervene in translation when discussing with refugees or asylum seekers who come to the office for counselling sessions and can be used as a support in any situation where the Resettlement Unit will need to communicate to a refugee or an asylum-seeker when it relates to their resettlement case or their situation of vulnerability in Tunisia.

This is a part-time position. However, the employee might be asked to perform, from time to time, intensive sessions of interpretation over some short periods (a week or two weeks) if needed. The variations of working schedule between the RST Unit and the interpreter will be based on an agreement and mutual understanding of each other’s needs and capacities.

Functional Statement:

• Assists during the resettlement and protection interviews and counseling sessions by providing interpretation and translation services for Arab speaking refugees and asylum-seekers.
• Acts as an interpreter when spontaneous demands emanate from the Resettlement Unit in relation with the facilitation of discussions and oral/verbal exchanges with Arab speaking refugees.
• Translates refugee documents written in Arabic to French.
• S/he must be a compassionate listener and should have the ability to make the applicant (s) as comfortable as possible.
• S/he must have the ability to connect with a wide range of people.
• Several refugees are survivors of torture and violence, the interpreter must be an emphatic listener and must have the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Certificates and/or Licenses

Translation.

For G5 – 3 years of relevant work experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years of relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher

Relevant Job Experience

Essential

Previous experience in proofreading/reviewing translations (English/French) or language teaching (French) and conference servicing.
