Operational Context

The Protection Sector in Libya is comprised of 13 partner organizations including national and international NGOs as well as UN agencies. The Protection Sector has three sub-sectors: Child Protection (coordinated by UNICEF), Gender-Based Violence (coordinated by UNFPA), and Mine Action (coordinated by UNMAS). The Protection Sector co-facilitates the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Technical Working Group with the Health Sector (coordinated by WHO and IOM). The Protection Sector is guided by a Strategic Advisory Group, comprised of 4 NGOs and 4 UN agencies.

The Protection Sector focus on two main objectives that prioritize the provision of specialized protection services, accountability to affected populations, and meaningful engagement with authorities and key stakeholders to promote community-ownership of protection activities to encourage a lasting shift in the protection environment of people in need in Libya.

Functional Statement:

The Snr Interpreter Assistant will be under the supervision of the Snr Protection Cluster Coordination Officer and work closely with the Protection Sector, the Shelter NFI Sector and the Cash Working Group.  The main activities that will be performed by the successful candidate are, non-exhaustively, the following:

Accountability and Responsibilities:

• Translate documents produced by the Protection Sector, the Shelter NFI Sector and/or the Cash Working Group from English to Arabic;
• Translate documentation and correspondence from Arabic into English and vice versa;
• Performs oral interpretation during Protection Sector, Shelter NFI Sector and Cash Working Group, and on needs basis in interagency meetings, when needed.
• Support engagement with national and local actors, affected communities and Libya based protection teams as advised by Sector Coordinators
• Participate in joint monitoring upon request.
• Performs other duties as required.

Monitoring and Progress Controls

• At least 3 guidance notes translated into Arabic;
• Interpretation services in at least 3 meetings with local actors;
• Participate in 12 protection sector meetings; at least 8 Shelter NFI meetings and 8 Cash Working Group meetings
