Project Summary

Search for Common Ground – Tunisia (Search-Tunisia) is currently implementing in partnership with FHI360 the USAID-funded Ma3an program, which aims to increase the capacity of communities to withstand political, social, and economic stresses and shocks by achieving the objectives of: 1) strengthened community resilience, 2) mitigated community vulnerabilities, and 3) improved capacity of Tunisian partners to sustain and replicate the model. Ma3an will spur 30 of Tunisia’s most vulnerable communities to action and generate sustainable resources for development in areas that are vulnerable to instability. Together with USAID-Tunisia’s programs in accountability, decentralization, and youth entrepreneurship (i.e., TADAEEM and Mashrou3i), Ma3an will consolidate democratic progress while fostering social cohesion in target areas.

Search in Tunisia

Search’s mission in Tunisia is to promote the culture of dialogue and diversity through the involvement of all parts of society while building their capacities. Search works in Tunisia to help members of Tunisian society to address conflicts and differences constructively through cooperation and dialogue. Search-Tunisia works across multiple channels, mainly with youth, CSOs, media actors, security forces, and local authorities to build the capacity of individuals and institutions to address challenges including differences and acting on common points. Through this approach and partnerships, Search-Tunisia has four main strategic objectives: (i) promoting peace education; (ii) fostering non-violent social dialogue; (iii) enhancing participatory and inclusive governance; and (iv) transforming violent extremism. More information about our Tunisia program can be found here.

About the Work

As part of the Ma3an program, Search-Tunisia is conducting Vulnerability Scans in the communities of Douar Hicher, Ettadhamen, Kef, Sidi Bouzid, and Sousse Sidi Abdelhamid. Vulnerability Scans are schematic assessments of local drivers and dimensions of vulnerabilities in these communities and will inform the design of locally-driven vulnerability-mitigation activities. Search-Tunisia seeks to recruit simultaneous transcribers/translators who will work closely with the Ma3an team to transcribe qualitative data from Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) from audio recordings in Tunisian dialect into written English.
The local transcribers will be responsible for transcribing qualitative data from FGDs and KIIs. Transcribers will rely on recordings in Arabic, and are expected to transcribe into English simultaneously. Transcribers will be provided with feedback on their initial work but then will be expected to continue transcription with minimum supervision.

This role requires a high level of fluency in Tunisian Arabic and written English, as the written transcriptions are expected to require little proofreading or revision and to be at a native or near-native level.

The local transcribers will report to the Ma3an Vulnerability Scan and Conflict Sensitivity Advisor and work closely with the Search-Tunisia DM&E team. The assignment will last for approximately 10 days in July.

Scope of Work

Local data transcribers/translators will be responsible for completing the following tasks:

  • Transcribe and translate approximately 60 pages of FGDs/KIIs from Tunisian dialect into English. (Note that the number of pages is approximate and may vary slightly according to the length of each FGD or KII).
  • Ensure transcription/translation is accurate, reliable, neat, and detailed, and incorporates specific terminology as agreed upon with the Ma3an Vulnerability Scan and Conflict Sensitivity Advisor.
  • Meet tight deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work.
  • Be available to follow up on missing/incongruent information, if required.

Deliverables & Payment

The local data transcribers will be expected to accurately and fully transcribe/translate approximately 60 pages of qualitative data from audio recordings of FGDs and KIIs conducted in Tunisian dialect into written English. Upon the successful completion of the task and signature of the Work Completion Certificate, they will be paid 45 dinars per transcribed/translated page. A full transcribed/translated page is calculated at 450 words using 12-point Arial font and double-spaced in Office Word.

Critères d'éligibilité

  • Native fluency in Tunisian Arabic.
  • Native or near-native fluency in written English.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Previous experience in transcription.
  • Computer literacy to be able to ensure organization, presentation, and storage of qualitative data.
  • An undergraduate degree in social sciences, humanities, international relations, or any related field is desirable
