Position Title:  Senior Researcher and Data Specialist

Form of Employment: Full-Time Contract

Starting Date: November 2022

Duration: One year with possibility of renewal

Background 

Belady – an Island for Humanity, is a human rights organization that advocates for civil and political rights and aims at promoting transparency and accountability and curbing violations. Belady is hiring a Senior Researcher and Data Specialist to manage the research and Data team. 

Role & Responsibilities.

• Data quality assessment, Improvement, and Coordination (60% allocated time)

1. Lead a data quality assessment of Belady’s database to prepare an evaluation report including most significant strengths and weaknesses as well as recommendations to improve our data collection and entry systems.
2. Lead and implement an improvement plan for Belady’s databases especially for the Egypt Prison Atlas. 
3. Lead the data collection and writing team and coordinate with them, especially in pertaining to the Egypt Prison Atlas project. 
4.  Conduct trainings on data and data softwares.

• Research & data processing development (30% allocated time)

1. Prepare with our researcher 2023’s timeline of research and publications based on national and international calendars as celebrations, international days etc.
2. Oversee and edit reports and research. 
3. Train research team in improving their research and writing.

• Other (10% of allocated time)

Perform other tasks upon request from Belady such as translation, drafting narrative reports, final revision, etc.

Required Qualifications 

1. Advanced degree (Masters or higher) in political science, social science, legal studies and/or other relevant fields.
2.  At least five years of demonstrated work experience in designing research strategies and delivering studies, particularly in the field of laws, human rights and/or political science.
3.  Familiarity with the situation in Egypt is highly preferred.
4.  Cultural and gender sensitivity.
5.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
6.  Mastery of English and Arabic, working level in French.
