Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Protection Specialist in Legal Aid.

About the job

The Protection Specialist – Legal Aid Specialist provides technical oversight to all DRC Tunisia legal protection activities. S/he guides the strategic development of DRC’s legal aid programme in Tunisia and will play a lead role in the roll out and facilitation of the Legal Aid Assessment Framework (LAAF). The role also provides support and/or technical guidance to all field staff and partners working on projects with protection and legal components. Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Provides technical oversight of all protection legal activities implemented by DRC Tunisia
  • Supports Protection Manager in ensuring quality of all protection activities in country
  • In collaboration with the Protection Manager, make recommendations for the strategic direction and design of DRC’s legal aid program;
  • Provides capacity building for DRC staff and partners working on projects with a legal component, including the development of capacity building plans and training materials.
  • Provides technical oversight for all partners with a legal component, including supporting on capacity assessments, trainings and day-to-day monitoring of programme quality.
  • Develops SOPs and tools for all new legal activities.
  • Develops outreach material with a legal focus, and supports on delivering awareness session, as required.
  • Ensures up-to-date knowledge of relevant legal matters through legal research.
  • Ensures all legal activities have relevant MEAL tools for assessing impact and quality, in collaboration with the Protection and MEAL Managers.
  • Conducts regular field visits to ensure that all legal activities are of a high quality.
  • Contributes to donor and management reports.
  • Develops needs assessment tools to inform program design and strategic direction, in collaboration with the Protection and MEAL Team.
  • Participates in relevant coordination meetings, as agreed with the Protection Manager.
  • Undertakes other tasks, as requested by the Line Manager.

 

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to have between 3 to 5 years of experience working for an INGO in the protection sector, with a focus on legal aid/ access to justice programming. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • Full professional proficiency in English, French and Arabic.
  • Significant technical experience in Legal Aid Programming (including in the provision of legal representation, legal counseling, and legal awareness raising).
  • Experience providing training on legal topics.
  • Experience working with national partners, local/government authorities, and UN organizations.
  • Excellent skill in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent analytical and report-writing skills.
  • Good understanding of humanitarian and do no harm principles.

Desired

  • Degree in Law; (Masters would be an advantage).
  • Experience of implementing alternative dispute resolution would be an advantage.
  • Experience working in an advisory role would be an advantage.

Contract length: 12 months

Band: G non management

Designation of Duty Station: Family duty station

Start date: 10/07/2023.
