 Who Are we:  The National Union of Tunisian Journalists- SNJT- was founded on January 13, 2008. However, the engagement of Tunisian journalists in the civil society dates back to the 1960s, when they founded their first organization, the Tunisian Press Association, which became later on the Association of Tunisian Journalists, in 1969.

The National Union of Tunisian Journalists is an independent, democratic, trade union that fights for: 

–            Freedom of expression and Information and human rights

–            Protection of the socio-economic rights of journalists

In collaboration with Hivos people unlimited, The SNJT is working on a project called: Promoting Freedom of Expression and Information in Tunisia.

  • Introduction of the project: This project aims at supporting the ongoing efforts to improve the legal and regulatory frameworks by supporting the ability of journalists and media actors to effectively exercise their rights to FoE; to promote a participatory and inclusive approach to the development and implementation of a strong and coherent legal framework that protects freedoms of expression and information; and to promote public understanding and support of .FoE and AtI with the collaboration with other relevant stakeholders in the media sector.

Objectives of the project: The goal of the 36-month program is to contribute to a Tunisian society that is committed to principles of FoE fostering an informed, inclusive and healthy public debate and democratic processes.

 Major Functions

  • The Program Officer (PO), with the support and supervision of the Program Manager, ensures the implementation of the activities of the Freedom of Expression and Information project (FoEs), the FoE project aims; 1) to support journalists, bloggers and media outlets in their efforts to promote FoE through raising their knowledge and understanding of the relevant legal frameworks, and their ability to exercise their rights; 2) to facilitate collaboration and exchanges between relevant stakeholders fostering a more participatory process of development and implementation of relevant legislation; and 3) to raise awareness and support amongst citizens on FoE and AtI and on their importance for better democratic processes, stable institutions and accountability.

Major responsibilities and duties: 

  • With the support of the Program Manager, develops workplans for the project implementation;
  • Implements the field activities of the FoE and Inf project;
  • Develops the knowledge and technical and information materials necessary for the project implementation;
  • Manages the organization and logistic for meetings and workshops to be organized in the framework of the project in the project areas;
  • Develops and maintains relations with the project stakeholders and beneficiaries;
  • With the support of the Program Manager, develops and maintains relations with concerned public administration entities;
  • Manages the monitoring framework for the project, as detailed in the proposal, and collects data for its implementation;
  • Prepares progress technical reports, ensures the management of the project budget according to SNJT administration standards and procedures and supports the project administration for the project financial reporting;
  • Upon agreement with Program Manager, undertakes travel and missions aimed at the effective undertaking of all the above-mentioned duties;
  • Good knowledge of social networks (community management….) 
  • Creation of content in English, French and Arabic.
  • This job description covers the main tasks and conveys the spirit of the sort of tasks that are anticipated proactively from staff. Other tasks may be assigned as necessary according to project needs.

Working Relationships

Internal:

  • Reports to the Program Manager.
  • Works closely with the finance officer.
  • Interacts regularly with the Fact-checking Unit.

External:

  • Establishes and maintains stable working relationships with project partners, other relevant regional organizations, NGOs, and national and local administrations.

 

  •  University level (bac +3) or more;
  •  A minimum of three (3) years relevant and practical professional experience related to Freedom of Expression and Access to Information Field / CSOs and private sector stakeholders
  •  Demonstrated experience in working with civil society organizations;
  •  Demonstrated networking and advocacy skills;
  •  Written and verbal communications skills in both English and French;
  •  Be able to organize your work so as to accomplish tasks in a timely manner and demonstrate a spirit of initiative and autonomy;
  •  Experience in working under pressure;
  •  Excellent communication skills ;
  •  Excellent interpersonal skills, human relations and teamwork;
  •  Adhere to SNJT values ​​Courage, Integrity, Respect, Collaboration;
  •  Demonstrate SNJT behaviors: strive for impact, listen attentively, collaborate openly, innovate without fear.
  •  Practical knowledge and experience of projects design, fund raising, report writing, developing training materials, advocacy and inter-agency networking and coordination.
  •  Excellent critical thinking and analytical, writing and reporting skills
  •  Ability to quickly understand and absorb new topics, issues and disciplines and distil relevant advocacy strategies from them.
