Background
The Collaborative Action for Handicraft Exports (ACEA) is a 7-year development program implemented by the Family Health International Organization (FHI360) and funded by the U.S. Department of State (DoS).
The program is implemented in partnership with the Tunisian National Handicrafts Office (ONAT). Its goal is to help artisans, especially those who are socially or geographically marginalized, to market their products, thereby promoting greater social and economic equity. Whenever possible, the project provides support for exports.
ACEA contributes to the empowerment of artisans and local communities by supporting them through a clustering approach. Cluster members (beneficiaries) meet and work in groups to learn various skills in collaboration with relevant support entities and technical experts.
To date, the program has launched cluster development activities in four sectors in Tunisia :
• Essential oils and related natural products in the Northwest and Central-West of Tunisia, under the WikiPAM brand
• Olive wood kitchenware and tableware in Sfax and Sidi BouZid, under the OLEARTbrand
• Amazigh Margoum and Kilim weaving in Toujane, Gabes, and Belkhir, Gafsa, under the
• Ragma brand
• Ancestral pottery in Al-Barrama, Siliana, under the Barrama brand
Since 2023, the ACEA program has supported structuring of three clusters, WikiPAM, OLEART, and Ragma, and the creation of three Economic Interest Groups (EIG) to enhance their competitiveness in the national and international markets. To achieve this, the ACEA program provides technical support in marketing and organizational management, including market identification, client support, etc.
