What is Mandarinat?

Mudawanat is a joint project by Culture Resource and the British Council that aims to encourage the creation and distribution of audio content about Arts and Culture in the region, in Arabic and in an open and accessible way across the web. Culture Resource is inviting cultural actors and artists from the Arab region to contribute to a two season podcast series that is focused on making visible the independent arts and culture sector, encouraging discussions on theoretical and practical matters, and engaging with regional actors and the general public.

The contributions to the series are based on themes and events that concern the local scenes and engage listeners in a trans-regional discussion. The endorsed themes will look into bringing in collective voices to highlight the discursive and intersectional spaces that exist within organizations, communities and activist groups. The project encourages the contributors to experiment with the sonic genre outside of the conventional radio format and employ creative methods of storytelling while reflecting on the regional specificities of the content .

Project outlook

The open call mainly invites cultural actors, artists, writers and unsolicited podcasters from different disciplines, as well as encourages beginners who would like to develop their skills in podcasting. Twelve contributors from throughout the region will be selected to take part in a training workshop and the production of the first two seasons of podcast episodes.

The participants in the project will attend hands-on sessions in sound design and podcast production, in November 2019, and will learn to prepare, script, and execute their projects. During the workshop, the theme of the series will be outlined collectively. Each participant is then expected to develop their own and/or collaborative ideas in line with the proposed theme.

The podcasts are going to be published serially starting with 2 consecutive seasons each of 12 episodes. The episodes will be published in a mix of classical Arabic and local dialects on multiple online platforms.

Project schedule

• The deadline for application is 31 August, 2019 at 11:00 PM Beirut time.
• The results will be announced on 7 October, 2019.
• The training workshop will take place in November 2019
• The first and second season will be published respectively in February 2020 and May 2020
