JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Marine Programme Officer (Marine Protected Areas and Footprint)

Reports to: Marine Programme Manager

Location: Tunis, Tunisia

Programme: Marine Programme 

Contract Type: Full-time

Eligibility: This position is open to Tunisian nationals.

I.Background / Context

Marine ecosystems in North Africa provide essential ecological, economic and social services. However, these ecosystems are increasingly affected by climate change, unsustainable fisheries, coastal development, pollution and other human pressures. Strengthening Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and reducing the ecological footprint of human activities are key priorities to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.

WWF North Africa works with national authorities, research institutions, civil society organizations and local communities to support the development and effective management of MPAs, promote ecosystem-based approaches to marine conservation, and address key drivers of marine degradation. The programme also collaborates with regional organizations and initiatives in the Mediterranean and North Africa, as well as with the broader WWF Network, to strengthen coordination, share knowledge and support the implementation of regional marine conservation priorities.

II.Major Function (Job Purpose)

The Marine Programme Officer will support the implementation and coordination of WWF North Africa’s activities related to Marine Protected Areas and marine conservation. The position will contribute to strengthening the planning, management and monitoring of MPAs while supporting initiatives aimed at reducing pressures and ecological footprint on marine ecosystems.

III. Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Support the implementation of WWF marine conservation projects related to Marine Protected Areas.
  2. Coordinate with national authorities, MPA managers, research institutions and local organizations involved in marine conservation.
  3. Support the development and implementation of monitoring programmes related to marine biodiversity and key habitats within MPAs.
  4. Contribute to initiatives aimed at reducing the human footprint on marine ecosystems.
  5. Facilitate collaboration with local communities and stakeholders to strengthen participatory governance and co-management approaches in MPAs.
  6. Support capacity-building activities for MPA managers and partner institutions.
  7. Contribute to the preparation of project proposals, technical reports and donor reporting.
  8. Ensure documentation of activities, lessons learned and best practices.
  9. Contribute to the representation of WWF North Africa in relevant technical meetings and workshops.

VI.Working Relationships

Internal: Marine Programme Manager, WWF North Africa programme staff, operations and finance teams, WWF network offices.

External: Government institutions, MPA authorities, research institutions, NGOs, local communities, and regional partners.

V.Profile

Required Qualifications:

– Master’s degree in marine biology, marine ecology, environmental management, fisheries science or related field.

– Minimum 5 years of experience in marine conservation or coastal management.

– Experience related to Marine Protected Areas or ecosystem management.

 

Required Skills and Competencies:

– Understanding of Marine Protected Area management and governance.

– Knowledge of marine conservation challenges in the Mediterranean region.

– Experience in project coordination and stakeholder engagement.

– Strong organizational and communication skills.

– Experience in reporting and proposal development is an asset.

 

Languages:

Fluency in Arabic, French and English (spoken and written).
