Within the framework of its project ‘Preventing institutional violence against youth in marginalised neighbourhoods’, Alert is looking to hire an experienced researcher to lead a qualitative research project in four cities, in Greater Tunis: Ettadhamen, Douar Hicher, Sidi Hassine and Fouchana.
Within the framework of this consultancy, the consultant will assist Alert’s team in conducting qualitative inter-disciplinary research on multiple forms of violence, the causes, experience(s), and impacts on youth socio-economic conditions and reintegration in society.
The tasks and responsibilities include:
1.1. Participating with Alert’s research team in formulating the focus group questionnaire.
1.2 Engaging with Alert’s scientific committee for the validation of the focus group questionnaire.
1.3. Assist Alert’s research team in validating the identification of young people who will participate in the focus group meetings.
1.4. Taking part in the organisation of the focus group meetings.
1.5. Overseeing the implementation of two focus groups per project site, each grouping 7 to 9 young people between the ages of 18 and 34, bring them to a total of 8 focus group meetings.
1.6. Overseeing the research assistant, who will be facilitating and leading on the focus group discussions.
1.7. Conducting briefing meetings with the research assistant before and after the focus group meetings.
1.8. In addition to the focus group meetings, the researcher will oversee a series of semi-structured interviews with political actors, representatives of social institutions working with young people (CDIS, centres for reproductive health) and public actors in the field of culture and youth (Maison de la culture, Maison des jeunes, etc.).
1.9. Contributing in the workshop to discuss the preliminary results of the focus groups and approving a preliminary conception of the research report.
1.10. Drafting the inter-disciplinary research report.
1.11. Follow up on the final completion of the report.
1.12. Taking part in disseminating the report with the media and social media.
2.1. Travel to project sites during the implementation of the research is expected, COVID-permissive.
2.2. Alert will ensure that all conducted meetings abide by health and safety precautions as well as respecting governmental decisions.
3.1. The research will run from May to December 2022.
The below are essential requirements for the consultancy:
4.1. A graduate of social sciences, sociology, or political science. Preferably a PhD holder.
4.2 Demonstrated knowledge of violence issues, perceptions and practices in Tunisia
4.3. Excellent research writing and editing skills.
4.4. A strong experience of working with civil society organisations and youth.
4.5. Excellent facilitation skills.
4.6. Excellent verbal and written skills in English or French.
4.7. Good command of Tunisian Arabic, written and spoken.
