Job Title: Junior Research Officer

Base: BBC Media Action, Tunis

Reports to: North Africa Research Manager

Period: 4 Months renewable depending on budget and performance

 

Context 

 

BBC Media Action is recruiting a Research Officer to support research in North Africa. 

 

BBC Media Action, the BBC’s international development charity, believes in the power of media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights. Our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. We work in partnership to provide access to useful, timely, reliable information. We help people make sense of events, engage in dialogue, and take action to improve their lives. Audiences are at the heart of all we do. Our audiences include the journalists and others we train, as well as listeners and viewers. Our work is built on insights from our research and engagement with communities. 

 

The Research and Learning Group, based in London and in each of our country offices, provides research and evaluation to support the development and impact assessment of media development and communication for development projects. We undertake research at audience, practitioner, organisation and system levels, including 

 

  • Formative research to guide the development of projects, including literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative primary research 
  • Pre-testing/piloting of media outputs with audiences, to feed into programme development 
  • Monitoring project progress including audience reactions 
  • Evaluation of the impact of our projects 
  • Research for learning what works in media development and communication for development. 

 

We support our country and regional teams to develop projects with clear and creative impact. We work closely with BBC Media Action’s Health, Governance, and Humanitarian Response and Resilience Advisors to understand and contribute to the development of best practice in our key thematic areas. 

 

Job Purpose 

 

The Junior Research Officer will report to the North Africa Research Manager and provide support for all aspects of the research program in North Africa. The Officer will assist in designing qualitative and quantitative research instruments, coordinating with research agencies, analysing data, writing research reports and presentations, and conducting qualitative research such as interviews and focus groups. The Junior Research Officer will also work with UK researchers, project, production, and finance staff in Tunis.

 

Main Duties 

  • Assist in research activities in North Africa to support media production and donor requirements.
  • Provide support in designing research plans, qualitative and quantitative research instruments.
  • Conduct qualitative research, including recruitment and data collection for interviews and focus groups.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative data analysis to ensure that interpretations support media product development.
  • Write research reports, presentations, and other dissemination products, under the direction of the Research Manager, to meet the needs of media creative and production teams, donors, and communication for development/media development communities.
  • Support the commissioning of agencies and consultants for qualitative and quantitative research, including negotiations on technical issues such as sampling, recruitment, analysis, field supervision, instrument development and administration, and data analysis.
  • Maintain a well-organized archive of research reports, data, and relevant procurement documents, including contracts, selection matrices, and invoices.
  • Collaborate with the Research Manager to monitor the implementation of research with field agencies, including quality, budget, and timely delivery of research outputs.
  • Proactively engage with non-research staff in Tunis to support the use of research in BBC Media Action’s creative outputs.

 

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience 

  • 2 years of experience in research and/or monitoring and evaluation. 
  • Proven experience in mixed research (qualitative and quantitative) instrument design, data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques, such as regression analysis and statistical tests.
  • Strong IT skills, including Excel, PowerPoint, and experience using data analysis software such as SPSS, and R (or similar). 
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to colleagues whose first language is not English. 
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, communicating in non-technical language to a range of audiences such as media and development practitioners. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage appropriately with researchers and other NGO staff. 
  • Track record of delivering research findings on time and to a high standard. 
  • Ability to plan and conduct work with minimal supervision. 
  • Excellent written and fluent spoken English, French and Arabic. 

 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Familiarity with international development issues relating to media, health, governance or resilience, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa regions. 
  • Experience of research on international or development issues, or working in developing countries. 
  • Experience in research and evaluation in crisis settings
  • Experience in the field of communication for development/communication 
  • Strong communication skills with ability to present ideas and concepts concisely in written and oral form is required
  • Strong and demonstrable facilitation skills
  • Strong qualitative and/or quantitative research skills, and experience of designing and managing mixed methods research in support of practical outcomes.

  • Resilience. Can maintain personal effectiveness by managing own emotions in the face of pressure, set-backs or when dealing with provocative situations. Can demonstrate an approach to work that is characterised by commitment, motivation and energy.
