The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) isan international non-governmental organization of judges and lawyers dedicated to advancing the rule of law and the legal protection of human rights around the world. Composed of 60 eminent judges and lawyers representing all legal traditions, the ICJ has been established in 1952 and has offices in Geneva, Brussels, Bangkok, Katmandu, Tunis, Johannesburg, Harare and Guatemala City.

The ICJis recruiting a full time Legal Researcher to join the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) Programme. The position will be based in the ICJ office in Tunis. Candidates should be available to join in early January 2019.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Director of the MENA Programme, the Legal Researcher willhold the following responsibilities:

  • Monitor and analyse the legal and political developments in Tunisia relating to the rule of law, human rights and the independence of the judiciary and the legal profession;
  • Draft legal briefings and memoranda, amicus curiae briefs, public statements, opinion briefs and reports, and press releases relating to the ICJ’s work in Tunisia;
  • Provide logistical support to the work of the MENA Programme, in particular in preparing the missions and seminars that the ICJ will carry out in Tunisia;
  • Develop and maintain a substantive dialogue on issues related to the work of the Programmein Tunisia,withmultiple stakeholders, in particular projects’ partners, representatives of civil society as well as the judicial, legal and human rights communities;
  • Assist in establishing effective working relationships with counterparts in relevant human rights organizations with the aim of developing networks, alliances and coalitions;
  • Inform and mobilize the ICJ Network in support of the work of the Programme;
  • Ensure close internal coordination between the MENA Programme and other ICJ Programmes;
  • Contribute to preparing and managing the Programme’s budget and contribute to developing proposals and plans of action.

Critères d'éligibilité

  • A degree in law. Further academic studies in international human rights law and international humanitarian law is highly desirable
  • A minimum of four years of legal experience, in particular with non-governmental or inter-governmental organizations in MENA countries
  • In-depth experience of legal and field research for advocacy purposes
  • Very good organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage conflicting demands, meet deadlines and adjust priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a multi-cultural team
  • Excellent oral and written English and Arabic skills. Knowledge of French is an asset.
