Hours: Full time 37.5 hours per week

Main responsibilities:

In close cooperation with other parts of the organisation, the communications department develops Human Appeal’s branding, marketing and external relations strategy.

The department helps the entire HA family to convey key messages consistently and coherently to individuals and to the humanitarian and development community.

The department provides the various HA stakeholders with access to adequate, timely and high quality material and resources to bolster their ability to convey advocacy and fund-raising messages through visual media, publications, campaigns and websites.

The Director of Communications will provide leadership in planning, coordinating and implementing programs to foster increased awareness, understanding and support of the HA mission, vision, accomplishments, and needs among its many internal and external companies.

Scope of the role:

The Director of Communications will provide leadership for all areas of communications policy and practice and lead responsibility for developing a communications strategy. Politically sensitive issues and complex problems impacting on other operations of Human Appeal worldwide.

Responsibility of resources:

  • An annual budget of 2.5 million

  • The overall responsibility of the HA website, online media and all media technical equipment.

  • Overall responsibility for communications information systems – internal e-groups.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

To develop cross-functional positioning, marketing, multimedia and communications efforts to widen the reach of Human Appeal to a broad group of stakeholders.

The post holder will have highly skilled knowledge of principles and practices for communications, institutional positioning, branding and strategic marketing programs and will develop and will track and monitor the success criteria for all marketing and communications programs and activities.

Human Appeals strategic communications program will compliment a major fundraising program and multi-faceted external relations program. This will include Strategic planning, development, agency and community relations.

The Director of Strategic Communications serves the communications, media relations, public relations and marketing departments working in collaboration with organisational communication and Public Affairs.

The director will focus on these key areas:

1) Strategic Communications

2) Media Relations

3) Public Relations

4) Marketing

5) Online

6) Multimedia, Publications and Production.

  • Lead in the development, implementation and regular review of the departmental strategy, ensuring it is aligned with the organisational priorities (including strategy) at all times.

  • Strategically plan, delegate, manage and review work plans and projects to ensure the departmental strategy is being achieved.

  • Provide leadership, guidance; coaching and mentoring to unit managers to ensure they achieve their unit objectives and their teams work productively.

  • Develop, maintain and protect HA’s brand and corporate identity with the objective of ensuring HA is recognised as one of the leading development agency.

  • Oversee all activities and strategies for branding and positioning issues for the HA

  • Develop the visual identity of the organisation and ensuring consistency across all departments.

  • To lead and strengthen HA’s visibility, image, influence and external relations by actively engaging with the wider humanitarian and development community and specifically by

    • Leading the development and utilisation of a consistent, coherent, meaningful and positive HA image and set of core policy.

    • Strengthening the messages, profile and recognition of HA and information on its activities through proactive communications and engagement;

    • Leading on and coordinating HA’s high level engagements, external and relations

    • Speaking at and learning from conferences and other public forums;

    • Representing HA and engaging meaningfully with institutional donor agencies, umbrella organisations, networks and other key stake holders.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the overall organisational and Human Appeal strategy, including key policies and procedures.

  • Develop a proactive media strategy, engaging national, regional and local UK media across print, radio television and online

  • Provide strategic direction on the development of marketing material materials.

  • Lead on all media relations involving HA including giving talks and media interviews about HA’s work and proactively seeking out these opportunities.

  • Lead strategic direction at the campaigns board level

  • Departmental objectives are monitored and achieved on the basis of KPIs;

  • The efficient planning and management of the departments work

  • To lead and provide effective and efficient management to the departments

  • That the department continuously analyses and adapts to the risks and opportunities posed by both internal and external changing environments;

  • Engaging in the strategic direction of the senior management team.

  • Leading, evaluating and managing a team within the communications department, as well as supporting other departments and volunteers.

  • Ensuring regular marketing activities are undertaken to keep the charity in the public eye.

  • Developing management information that allows finer targeting of appeals and increase yield from initiatives.

  • Produce new and creative ways to generate funds, increase exposure and expand our support.

  • Creating, building and developing partnerships within the corporate sector, as well as small to medium businesses/enterprises.

  • Taking responsibility for developing in-house knowledge and skills.

  • Assisting staff in other departments, as required, in order to facilitate the work of the charity.

  • Participating in meetings, conferences and team activities.

  • Other duties as per the request of Chief Executive in the interest of the company’s objectives

Other:

  • Must adhere to the charities policies and procedures, e.g. Health & Safety at Work, Freedom of Information Act 2000, Data Protection Act 1998, Equal Opportunities, Company Handbook, Quality Management System, Investor in People etc. at all times

  • Will respect the confidentiality of all matters relating to their employment and other members of staff

  • To demonstrate on-going professional development through reflective practice and participation in internal and external development opportunities as evidenced in a Continuing Professional Development portfolio.

  • To participate in the appraisal process and ensure that agreed objectives are achieved, taking responsibility for directing own learning and development activities (e.g. private study, e-learning)

  • To attend and contribute positively to meetings, conferences and training courses as agreed with the line manager

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, managers, directors and the general public.

  • Assist staff in other departments and regions as required in order to facilitate the work of the charity

  • Other duties as per the request of the Director of Fundraising and Communications in the interest of the organisation objectives

Qualifications and experience:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or an allied field; or a minimum of five years of experience writing about Arts, Science or Humanities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Public relations and marketing experience, preferably in a charity environment

Sophisticated level knowledge of current issues, trends and opportunities in the humanitarian charity

Experience of developing and establishing strategies and work plans which help to deliver the wider organisational objectives.

Demonstrated excellence in news judgement and strong demonstrated interviewing skills.

Superior ability to lead, direct and manage.

Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining staff.

Development of Community relationships

Working knowledge of English and languages grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence construction and effective journalistic style.

Demonstrated ability to plan content and layout of publications.

Proven ability to write and communicate effectively in a variety of ways (magazine articles, scripts, press releases, reports, speeches, brochures, white papers, talking points, etc.) and in ways appropriate for targeted audiences (media, support groups, legislators, etc.)

Demonstrated ability to read and understand humanitarian crisis terms and concepts and then translate it into easily understandable terms for the general public.

Exceptional ability to determine and market the media and news worthiness of a story and place it with regional, national and international media

  • A minimum of 4 years senior level experience in the charity sector.

  • Strong project management skills and initiative.

  • Knowledge of web based media and its applications.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise a complicated workload.

  • Experience as a manager in a similar organisation is an advantage.

  • Knowledge of Islamic financial matters (Zakat, Waqf, Qurbani etc.) is an advantage.

  • Knowledge of additional languages, Arabic and French is an advantage.
