World Learning Tunisia 

Reports to: Center Director 

Salary Range (gross): 1800 TND – 3200 TND per month, depending on level of experience and on part time or full-time employment. 

Anticipated Start Date: Earliest convenience 

Base of Designation/Remote Eligible Tunis, with excursions within Tunisia and possibly to Italy.

World Learning Tunisia (SIT Study Abroad) seeks a full time or part time homestay coordinator to identify and screen local families, for all programs, in collaboration with the Center Director (CD) and in accordance with World Learning Policies, determining the appropriate fit for each student. The homestay coordinator is also responsible for following up on homestay issues and resolving them under the guidance of the Center Director. The homestay coordinator must be available to address emergencies as they arise, including being able to transport students to seek medical care and other resources as the and when the need arises. The homestay coordinator contributes to the overall success of the program and may undertake general program support tasks as needed. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Contribute to the general success of all programs by collaborating with team members, supporting various program activities, 
  • Work collaboratively with and in support of the Student Services Coordinator to ensure student wellbeing and success, as well as alignment with overall program goals. 
  • Identify, screen homestay families according to program/World Learning policies regulations;
  • Ensure that Homestay Family Information sheet is always up to date and that updates are provided to CD; 
  • Match students and families in collaboration with CD; 
  • Conduct homestay orientation and training of homestay families; 
  • Conduct initial homestay briefing and orientation with students; 
  • Organize events relevant to the homestay under the guidance of the center director including preliminary meeting(s), student transfers to homestays, and farewell dinner; 
  • Conduct regular check-ins and home visits to ensure safety, mutual satisfaction, and cultural adjustment. 
  • Be available to students and families as point person for any homestay problems;
  •  Provide students with culturally appropriate strategies to navigate homestays and any issues;
  • Must be reachable by phone to promptly address emergencies as they arise; 
  • Deal with emergencies in homestays as they arise in collaboration with the CD;
  • Promptly communicate any changes or concerns to the CD; 
  • Create pre- and post-program action plan for homestay portion of the program including homestay evaluations and feedback to families at end of semester; 
  • Create database of backup families available and work with the CDs to develop a strategy for rotation of families. 
  • When necessary, accompany students to medical appointments; 
  • Collaborate with the CD and other staff in the planning of the semester program;
  • Participate in training as assigned; 
  • Provide guidance and information on local culture; 
  • Attend scheduled program events and activities as requested by the CD; 
  • Provide regular reports on homestay; 
  • Carry out other miscellaneous tasks as assigned. 

Must be willing and able to travel on program excursions as determined by the CD. Excursions may range from one day up to several weeks in duration. 

Programs are situated in urban as well as remote locations where accommodations may be rudimentary, and accessibility limited. Some aspects of the program may require physical exertion such as, but not limited to, occasionally driving, walking, as well as remaining stationary for long periods. Depending on the theme of the program there may be excursions in rugged terrain which may require, but are not limited to, activities such as hiking, climbing and/or water-based sports. 

REQUIREMENTS 

Required Experience/Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in the field of humanities (e.g., and social sciences and humanities (i.e., anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, geography, history, demography, education, linguistics) or its equivalent required
  •  2 – 5 years of Civil society or professional experience working with youth 
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the location where this position is offered;
  •  Knowledge of local communities in Marsa, Sidi Bou Said, and Carthage; 
  • Experience or background in training to train selected families 
  • Familiarity with/understanding of age demographic and US youth/culture (where possible);
  •  Experience working with cross-cultural issues and cultural adaptation;

Required Skills: 

  • Ability to match students with the appropriate homestay families; 
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills in Arabic or French, and English;
  • Excellent social skills to easily establish connections with students, other staff, and host families
  • Excellent organizational skills – must be able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer applications. 
  • Driving license and clean driving record as well as a safe and reliable personal means of transportation
