CALL FOR A GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Design and Layout of Professional Guides in Public Policy and International Development

Attalaki is seeking to engage a qualified Graphic Designer / Editorial Designer to support the design, layout, and production of two professional practical guides developed as part of its capacity-building and knowledge-development initiatives in Tunisia.

The assignment will involve the design and production of two separate bilingual professional guides addressing themes related to public policy, professional practice, and international development.

The guides are intended as practical reference resources for professional and academic audiences and will be disseminated in both Arabic and English, in print and digital formats.

Objective of the Assignment

The objective of the assignment is to ensure that the two guides are presented through a professional, coherent, accessible, and visually engaging editorial design, while facilitating their practical use by professional and academic audiences.

The selected designer will be responsible for translating finalized textual content into high-quality publications, ensuring consistency in layout, typography, visual hierarchy, bilingual presentation, and overall visual identity.

Scope of Work

The selected Graphic Designer will be expected to:

• Develop the visual concept, editorial design, and visual identity for the two guides.
• Design and format the guides in Arabic and English, ensuring appropriate bilingual typography, right-to-left / left-to-right formatting, consistency, readability, and visual hierarchy.
• Develop clear and coherent page layouts incorporating headings, text boxes, tables, case studies, practical tools, checklists, exercises, and other relevant content elements.
• Create or adapt appropriate visual elements, including icons, diagrams, infographics, callout boxes, photographs, illustrations, charts, and other graphic components, as relevant.
• Design professional front and back covers for each guide and ensure visual consistency across the Arabic and English versions.
• Participate in coordination and review meetings with Attalaki and relevant contributors, incorporate feedback, and undertake agreed revisions.
• Prepare final print-ready and digital files, including editable source/design files.

Expected Deliverables

The selected Graphic Designer will be expected to deliver: 

1. Visual Concept and Design System 

• Initial visual concept and editorial design for the two guides. 

• Proposed typography, visual identity, page structure, and graphic elements. 

• Sample pages for review and validation prior to full production. 

2. Bilingual Guide Design 

• Complete designed versions of both guides in Arabic and English, based on the finalized content. 

• Consistent editorial design and visual identity across all language versions. 

• Professional covers and integration of relevant visual and graphic elements. 

3. Final Production Files 

• Print-ready, high-resolution PDF files. 

• Optimized digital versions for online dissemination. 

• Editable source/design files and relevant production assets, where applicable. 

• Final files incorporating all agreed revisions and corrections.

Design and Methodological Considerations

The guides should adopt a professional, contemporary, accessible, and practical visual approach appropriate for publications addressing public policy and international development.

The design should:

• Facilitate quick navigation and consultation.
• Clearly distinguish between analytical content and practical tools.
• Support the presentation of case studies, examples, checklists, exercises, and key recommendations.
• Maintain a consistent visual identity across both publications.
• Ensure high readability in both Arabic and English.
• Account appropriately for the different typographic and layout requirements of Arabic and Latin scripts.
• Be suitable for both professional printing and digital reading.

The designer is not expected to develop or substantially revise the substantive content of the guides. The textual content will be provided by Attalaki and/or the relevant contributors. The designer’s role will focus on editorial design, visual communication, formatting, layout, and production.

Profile of the Graphic Designer

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

• Demonstrated professional experience in graphic design, editorial design, publication design, or visual communication.
• Proven experience designing reports, guides, manuals, publications, or other multi-page professional documents.
• Demonstrated ability to work with Arabic and English bilingual publications.
• Strong knowledge of professional layout and typesetting principles, including Arabic right-to-left formatting.
• Proficiency in relevant professional design software, such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or equivalent tools.
• Strong understanding of typography, visual hierarchy, grids, and information design.
• Ability to translate complex technical content into clear and accessible visual structures.
• Ability to work collaboratively with content contributors and incorporate structured feedback.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Experience designing publications related to public policy, international development, education, governance, research, or professional capacity development will be considered an asset.

Duration and Modality

The assignment will be conducted over a short-term period and will primarily involve:

• Remote coordination and design work.
• Initial consultation with Attalaki and relevant contributors.
• Development and validation of the initial visual concept.
• Progressive layout and design of the two guides.
• Review and revision rounds.
• Preparation of final print and digital files.

The precise timeline will be agreed upon with the selected designer based on the availability of the finalized content.

Indicative Volume of Work

The assignment covers two bilingual professional guides, each currently anticipated to be approximately 20 pages in total, subject to adjustment based on the finalized content, bilingual formatting, and design requirements.

The final number of pages and corresponding design requirements will be confirmed with the selected designer once the content is finalized.

Confidentiality

Given the professional and institutional nature of the materials, the selected designer will be expected to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all content, documents, drafts, source materials, and information received or developed during the assignment.

The designer may not publish, reproduce, distribute, or use any project materials or content for portfolio, promotional, or other purposes without the prior written authorization of Attalaki.

Use of Outputs

The final publications will be produced in print and digital formats in both Arabic and English and disseminated through relevant professional and institutional networks.
