Internship in Global Health and Data Science: COVAX MENA Project 

 

Title: Global Health and Data Science: COVAX MENA Project Intern

Type: Paid Internship 

Start date: April 2021

Duration: 3 to 6 months

Background: 

The COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) Facility was launched in 2020 by the WHO, Gavi and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and other key partners to ensure vaccine access to the world’s most vulnerable. 

 

To support COVAX engagement in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) developed an advocacy project that aims to amplify the participation of MENA countries in the COVAX Facility and promote further engagement from the region. 

 

The project includes the development of a regional platform for COVID-19 vaccination stakeholders as well as a regional data visualization tool for the vaccination efforts in the region. The tool will be hosted by the Tunisian Center for Public Health (TunCPH), a regional NGO working on health promotion and disease elimination. The project ultimately aims to strengthen vaccination efforts carried out through COVAX and to minimize the disparities and to promote equitable access to vaccines. 

 

Purpose of this Role: 

GLIDE and TunCPH are seeking Data Science Interns who will work closely with the COVAX MENA team on data collection, verification and entry for the data visualization tool. The intern will report to the Director of TunCPH This opportunity will provide the intern with valuable knowledge and experience in data science and COVID-19 in the MENA region while allowing them to take part in creating a tool that will inform decision makers on the regional COVID-19 response.

 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the planning and participation of the COVAX data visualization tool
  • Support data collection, verification, entry and regular updates of the github used for the visualization tool
  • Assist in the creation and development of the readMe file for the tool
  • Participate in outreach to stakeholders and partners for the development and promotion of the tool
  • Additional tasks and responsibilities as required

 

The above list of responsibilities is not exhaustive. Priorities and needs may evolve throughout the course of the internship. 

 

Critères d'éligibilité

  • Student (or recently graduated student) working toward a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a focus in public health, health education, epidemiology, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of health promotion and/or public health
  • Fluent proficiency in English and preferably in Arabic and French (written and spoken)
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with short deadlines and under minimal supervision
  • Ability to work well independently and as well as in teams
  • Strong work ethic and organizational skills
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Public health experience in the MENA region is an added value
  • Experience using Github and data visualization tools or platforms is desirable
