Ma3an (Tunisia Resilience and Community Empowerment project):

Ma3an (“Together” in Arabic) is a five-year (September 2018 – August 2023), $48.5 million USAID project that engages some of Tunisia’s most vulnerable communities as the engines of their own transformation. Ma3an will work with 33 communities in 15 governorates across Tunisia. The project’s goal — to increase capacity of communities to withstand political, social, and economic stresses and shocks — is supported by three interrelated objectives:

  • Objective 1: Community resilience is strengthened.
  • Objective 2: Tunisian capabilities to prevent and counter violent extremism are enhanced.
  • Objective 3: Build capacity of Tunisian partners to sustain and replicate the model.

Background on Intergenerational Storytelling Activity in Sidi Bouzid:

Under Objective 2, Ma3an will implement an “Intergenerational Storytelling” activity in Sidi Bouzid center. This activity will include training 80 youth and adults on storytelling methods and supporting them to present their stories in showcase events in their community, including a final event open to the public.

The consultant will work with Ma3an’s team and a group of youth facilitators from the community to plan and implement this activity.

Main responsibilities include:

  1. Participating in an orientation and training session and follow up meetings during which the consultant will be introduced to the methodology and the technical content, in addition to their role in implementing the activity.
  2. Reviewing, providing feedback on, and finalizing the Facilitator Guide document and preparing for the youth facilitator Training of Trainers (ToT).
  3. Conducting the three-day Youth Facilitator ToT.
  4. Preparing for and facilitating 5 different 1.5-day storytelling training sessions with the support of the youth facilitators.
  5. Supporting intergenerational teams to further develop, practice, and finalize their stories to prepare for culminating events, including the “human library event”.
  6. Supporting the facilitation of showcase storytelling events, including 1-2 practice events and the final human library event.
  7. Providing additional mentoring and support to youth facilitators to enable them to increase their skills in facilitating storytelling processes, including:
    1. Facilitate bi-weekly reflection sessions during which youth facilitators will reflect on their learnings and experiences and provide input on their further needs.
    2. Provide hands-on, experiential learning that will equip youth facilitators to support the master trainer in organizing and facilitating the 1.5-day-long storytelling training.
    3. Provide one-on-one mentoring on storytelling, facilitation, and coaching techniques to enable youth facilitators to provide support to the youth and adults participating in storytelling activities.
  8. Participate in debriefing sessions to collect lessons from this pilot and discuss how it can be adapted in the future.

Deliverables/Outputs & Due Dates:

The consultant and technical monitor will coordinate closely on the tasks, deliverables and due dates outlined below, and will agree on changes to them as needed within the set scope, period of performance and agreed upon LOE for this consultancy.

The storytelling events master trainer consultancy is a 32 days assignment starting 14 August 2020 and ending 30 October 2020.
