“Building the Future” is an online publication that aims at identifying and presenting those cultural practices that had most significant impact on the cultural transformation in the MENA region in the period from 2011 to 2017. The publication is a collaborative project among longstanding partners working in and with the region. It is their contribution to showcase the great wealth of talent and initiatives beyond the regional borders and share these with the global cultural community to allow for inspiration and new as well as renewed cooperation – in a story-telling format.
The MENA region has a great wealth of talent and initiatives to be discovered. Since 2011 lots of energy and resources have been untied. It is now time to
This wealth should be shared through “small world stories” as online publication in English and Arabic language version within the region and with the international community of colleagues and cultural actors (UNESCO, IFACCA, others) in order to enable evidencebased discussions between civil society and governments.
The project has been initiated by the German Commission for UNESCO and the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) and developed further together with Racines and Ettjiahat.
An editorial team from the initiators and partnering organisations developed the grid for identifying up to 20 practices that should result into “small world stories”. The grid is sent out as invitation to other organisations and stakeholders from the region that enables a decentralised albeit orchestrated storyboard. Each invited organisation/stakeholder/actor can submit up to three contributions max.
The editorial team will write the stories based on the information provided within the grid to ensure a minimum level of comparability. Here the approach of “public value of culture” and the level of impact of each practice is key and the guiding focus of the publication.
“Public Value of Culture” means in how far the project or practice have impacts beyond the culture sector, e.g. contributes to social cohesion and justice, sustainable development, economic valuations or participatory governance in respective institutions. The practices are selected taking into account this approach and show implicit or explicit links to human rights, gender, diversity, social inclusion, sustainable development or environmental issues.
Impact means “a powerful effect that something, especially something new, has on a situation or person”1. It implies that something changes as a result of a cultural experience, at least temporarily (Brown 2006, Selwood 2010).2 Impact can be immediate (=results and outcome), at mid-term (1-2 years) or long-term (5-10 years).
After the selection process, all contributors will be notified which practices will be included into the online publication. Moreover, the final text will be sent for proof read and verification to the submitting organisation. The online publication will be launched at the beginning of December 2017.
By filling the grid, you will transfer the rights to use the texts and images contained therein to the German Commission for UNESCO. These are used exclusively for the online publication “Building the Future” by respecting the given copyright indications
