SharaKa – for inclusive Climate action Project

The 24-month project aims to increase the ability of civil society and citizens in Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Palestine (oPt) to safely and meaningfully influence and co-create just inclusive, and rights-based climate actions. To achieve the above, the project will take an inclusive, multi-stakeholder and justice-based approach, grounded in the partners’ collective experience in the MENA region working on Climate Justice, Climate reporting safety and security for activists and media actors. Are you a representative of a Civil Society Organization (CSO), network, or movement advocating for climate and environmental justice, defending natural resources, and believing that climate and environmental issues should be discussed and prioritized?

Are you an environmental or climate activist who believes you can impact society and influence narratives about climate and environmental decisions?

 

If you meet the above initial eligibility criteria, you may be the right person to apply to become a core member of the MENA Climate Justice Platform (MENA-CJP) within the SharaKa – for Inclusive Climate Action Project. Please review the details of the role below before you apply.

 

Hivos will lead the creation of a climate justice platform with 18+ civil society activists 3-5 members from  Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia and Palestine (oPt). This platform will facilitate online and offline coordination and networking throughout the project period and beyond to establish a unified, inclusive civil society climate action plan for the MENA region. It will provide a safe space for members to identify priority areas related to climate justice and natural resources, decide on key policy processes to engage with, and build a stronger voice on shared priorities to communicate with the private sector, local governments, and the donor community.

 

Core membership duties and actions:

Within the SharaKa- for inclusive Climate Action project duration, the core members of the climate justice platform will:

  • Organize and meet at least monthly with other core members to shape the platform Identity, structure, governance, strategy, membership, bylaws and decide on its future legal regional entity.
  • Identify priority areas to work on in each participating country and/or on a regional level.
  • Open the platform for other members to Join based on agreed criteria.
  • Co-plan two multi-stakeholder dialogue sessions and one roundtable meeting per participating country with a selection of wider CSO networks, NRDs, private sector, local movements, key stakeholders, and independent media…etc.

“MENA-CJP core members together with local organizations will be the main decision-makers on the content of the dialogue sessions and roundtable discussions with the support of the project partners”.

  • With advisory support from project partners and special training by advocacy advisors, the core members of the climate justice platform will jointly develop a policy paper with key recommendations through a series of engaging online and offline meetings. The core members will play a key role in identifying stakeholders at the country and regional levels to share the key policy recommendations.
  • The MENA-CJP core members will decide on the main processes to engage with and build a stronger voice on shared priorities to be communicated with the private sector, local governments, and the donor community.
  • Participate in local, regional, and international conferences.
  • Other actions are to be decided by the core members.

 

Core membership benefits:

CSOs (Civil Society Organizations), environmental activists, natural resources defenders and movements, are encouraged to become one of the five core members per country for the climate justice platform for several compelling reasons:

 

  1. Global impact: Through joining and participation, individuals and organizations can engage in influencing environmental policies at local, regional, and global levels, especially regarding climate action and other urgent climate / environmental issues.
  2. Access to resources: Core platform members will be eligible to apply for a grant, which can enhance their Digital safety, capacity and effectiveness in addressing climate / environmental challenges.
  3. Participation in regional: two core platform members from each participating country will be eligible to receive support to meaningfully participate in policy processes through attending regional and/or international events.
  4. Capacity development: Core platform members and other members joining the platform will gain access to training, workshops, and capacity-building programs, including digital safety and literacy initiatives. These opportunities enable CSOs, activists, NRDs, and movements to enhance their skills, knowledge, and organizational capabilities, thereby strengthening their contributions to environmental sustainability efforts.
  5. Networking opportunities: Membership provides links and collaboration with like-minded regional and global organizations. This enables CSOs to learn from each other’s experiences, share best practices, and forge partnerships that can lead to more comprehensive and impactful initiatives.
  6. Advocacy power and collective impact: By working together within the platform, members can amplify their voices and increase their advocacy power. Collaborative efforts can advocate for just energy transitions, climate justice, environmental protection, and equitable resource allocation with greater impact than individual actions.
  7. Influence on policy: core members will be equipped with knowledge and targeted coaching to develop policy papers ensuring that their perspectives and concerns are considered in climate policy development and implementation processes.

 

Overall, joining a climate justice platform provides avenues for amplifying voices, accessing resources, collaborating on various levels, and contributing effectively to securing social and economic rights affected by climate issues.

 

Core membership complementary selection criteria:

We are looking for Individuals who are committed to voluntary work on climate /environmental issues, willing to share knowledge, lead and mobilize others. The selected core members in each country should complement each other in the below aspects:

  • Individuals who have experience working on climate and environmental issues in their respective country and/or MENA region. 
  • Active involvement in local communities, particularly in initiatives related to climate action or environmental sustainability.
  • Access to a broad network of relevant stakeholders, including local and regional policymakers and CSOs.
  • Individuals who can represent marginalized communities and are able to convey the voices and messages in their participating country or involvement in organizations or movements that advocate for marginalized or underrepresented groups.
  • Representation across different demographics, including age, gender, and social backgrounds, to ensure diverse perspectives.
  • Able to effectively represent regional concerns, challenges and needs beyond the selected countries.
  • Individuals who demonstrated knowledge and experience in climate and environmental policy, or related fields with the ability to develop policy papers that reflect the needs and realities of the region.
  • Active on policy ProcESses like NDC revision and the development of National Adaptation Plans (NAP) or Experience participating in regional and international conferences, such as COP, MENA Week…etc. contributing to broader discussions on climate action.
