WISER Programme – Strengthening Wildfire Communication in Tunisia & Algeria

1. BACKGROUND

BBC Media Action, in partnership with the UK Met Office under the WISER MENA Programme, is implementing the WISER Algeria & Tunisia project. This initiative aims to improve how weather and climate-related information is communicated, particularly in the context of wildfire risks. The programme works with national institutions, local media, and communities to strengthen communication, preparedness, and early warning systems.

In Tunisia, the project is active in wildfire-affected areas such as Jendouba, Kasserine, Kairouan, Béja, and Bizerte. 

In Algeria, the focus includes Béjaïa, Tizi Ouzou, and other high-risk areas.

2. OBJECTIVES

The programme seeks to build the capacity of media professionals, community radio journalists, social media influencers, and civil society organizations to:

– Produce impactful, wildfire-related content using Weather and Climate Information Services (WCIS).

– Disseminate content via radio, TV, and digital platforms.

– Engage communities in wildfire preparedness and response.

– Share knowledge and best practices through a Tunisia-Algeria regional exchange.

3. WHO CAN APPLY

Eligible applicants include:

– Journalists and producers from local or community media.

– Community radio stations.

– Digital content creators or influencers active in public interest communication.

– Civil society organizations involved in environmental or public outreach.

Applicants must:

– Be based in wildfire-affected regions of Tunisia or Algeria.

– Have an interest in public service communication, climate/environmental issues, or emergency response.

– Be available from August 2025 to February 2026.

4. PROGRAMME COMPONENTS

Selected participants will benefit from:

– Practical training on WCIS.

– Tailored mentorship to co-produce wildfire-related content.

– Opportunities for broadcast and digital dissemination.

– Participation in regional exchange workshops between Tunisia and Algeria.

5. EXPECTED COMMITMENTS

– Attend both in-person and online training sessions.

– Engage in mentorship activities.

– Produce and disseminate agreed media content.

– Participate in knowledge-sharing events.
