Context

BBC Media Action, the BBC’s international development organisation, uses the power of media and communication to inform, connect and empower people around the world, helping them to shape their own lives. Working with broadcasters, governments, other organisations and donors, BBC Media Action provides information and stimulates positive change in the areas of governance, health, and resilience and humanitarian response.

BBC Media Action is independent from the BBC, but shares the BBC’s fundamental values and has partnerships with the BBC World Service and national broadcasters that reach millions of people in developing countries. In addition, BBC Media Action trains journalists and reaches audiences with local broadcast partners. In line with the BBC value of audiences being at the heart of everything we do, research with audiences is embedded across our project life cycle.

BBC Media Action’s Research Group conducts research in order to understand our audiences and the impact of our programmes. BBC Media Action has an integrated team of up to 100 specialist qualitative and quantitative researchers based both in the UK and our country offices. We undertake research at audience, practitioner, organisation and system levels, including:

  • Formative research to guide the development of projects, including literature reviews, qualitative and quantitative primary research.
  • Pre-testing/piloting of media outputs with audiences, to feed into programme development.
  • Monitoring project progress including audience reactions.
  • Evaluation of the impact of our projects.
  • Research for learning about what works in media development and communication for development.

Our work in North Africa

Our work in North Africa covers Tunisia, Algeria and Libya, with our office based in Tunisia. Current projects include capacity building of the Algerian media to promote the development of media that better meets the needs of the Algerian population, provision of content that improves Libyans’ access to information and encourage debate and participation in Libya’s transition through the El Kul Facebook page and a platform (Ija Inbox) for young Tunisians, representing all regions of Tunisia, to express and share their views on various economic, social, cultural and political issues.

Job Purpose:

The Research Officer holds day to day responsibility for research elements within delegated project(s). S/he carries out research, prepares reports and delivers presentations in line with project requirements. S/he supports the Research Manager (RM) as required.

Main Duties:

  • Support the RM in the design and planning of both quantitative and qualitative research, including designing research tools and documents;
  • Fieldwork coordination and logistics planning, including carrying out recruitment of research participants;
  • Moderate Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and conduct In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) as well as other qualitative methods;
  • Undertake qualitative data analysis using analysis frameworks;
  • Quantitative data processing & analysis, in particular undertaking quantitative data analysis including cleaning and manipulating of large data sets in Excel, STATA or SPSS and running descriptive analysis; Undertake qualitative data analysis using analysis frameworks;
  • With support from the RM, write research reports, presentations and other dissemination products in a range of formats to fulfill the requirements of media production teams, donors and the media for development communities;
  • Present research reports and key insights to internal project team and external partners.

Critères d'éligibilité

  • Two years’ experience of working in a similar role, ideally with thematic relevant to BBC Media Action’s work
  • Strong quantitative research skills, with strong command of SPSS.
  • Experience of designing surveys;
  • Experience of conducting quantitative data analysis, particularly descriptive analysis (ideally using SPSS);
  • Experience of designing and managing qualitative research in support of practical outcomes;
  • Experience of undertaking qualitative fieldwork (including focus groups and in-depth interviews);
  • Experience of undertaking qualitative data analysis;
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, communicating in non-technical language to a range of audiences such as media and development practitioners;
  • Excellent track record of delivering research findings on time, and to a high standard
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and work as a member of a team, demonstrating good interpersonal skills;
  • A demonstrable understanding of issues in relation to research ethics and safeguarding;
  • Good IT skills, including use of internet search engines, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Arabic;
  • Willingness to travel within the region as required;
  • Commitment to the aims and objectives of BBC Media Action.
  • Understanding of development issues in North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Libya) (desirable)
  • Experience working with media organisations in applying research findings to production of media outputs and broadcast strategy (desirable)
  • Experience in research around issues related to media, young people and or governance issues (desirable)

  • Communication – The ability to get one’s message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information.
