Title: Social Media Content Producer                                    

Department:  BBC Media Action

Reports To: El Kul Editor and Coordinator                            

Based:  Tunis, Tunisia

Purpose of the job

We require a dynamic Social Media content Producer with a developed understanding of editorial values together with current affairs and civil society activities. You will be expected to write and produce multi-media news for El Kul and to originate inspiring, humanitarian and daily stories and prepare material for broadcast, offering ideas and guidance to the Editors so that El Kul continues to provide a balanced, accurate, diverse and engaging platform for national Libyan dialogue.  

Main Duties

  • To create fast-paced style content and engaging storytelling across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Twitter).
  • To research, write, translate, edit or adapt items, stories or programme material.
  • To deliver to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • To develop content that will promote and increase public participation through social media, extending the reach of project outputs, under the supervision of the Editorial Management.
  • To ensure content reflects our diverse audiences.
  • To video edit content for El Kul platforms using various motion pictures/video editing software.
  • Develop scripted material for Facebook and other outlets. Conduct extensive research on various topics. And edit content for correct spelling and grammar.
  • To assist the Editorial team in planning next day or longer-term coverage.
  • To be up to date with the main stories, fact checking; undertaking background research as required.
  • To liaise effectively with correspondents and producers, gathering advice on stories and coverage and providing support to the Editorial team.
  • To assist in maintaining an accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date version of the Newsgathering News Diary and contacts.
  • To come up with strong, creative ideas for coverage and setting up material for the coming days or weeks as required.
  • To find contributors and interviewees as well as other sources of material and/or actuality, as appropriate and to the required specification.
  • To be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required in order to build compelling and engaging sequences. To think through and around editorial problems, developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.
  • To offer ideas for stories and items, programmes and series, attending pre-programme and planning meetings if required. To suggest new angles and formats on existing stories in order to bring them to life for the audience.
  • To liaise closely with other team members and with contributors, reporters, stringers and alumni when commissioning material to give effective guidance and feedback.
  • To coordinate with staff members, technicians and Alumni network to develop contacts, enterprise original content and exclusive stories
  • To build strong relationships with other parts of the BBC Media Action North Africa office
  • To be prepared to take on any role required by the Editorial team in order to respond to the needs of the newsroom.
  • Ensuring compliance with BBC policies, guidelines, legislative and regulatory requirements, so that the BBC’s exposure to risk is minimised.

Skills and experience

  • Experience in creating top-performing storytelling across a variety of content types.
  • Experience in editing with different software such as (Final Cut and Adobe Photoshop)
  • Experience in developing and implementing new and innovative approaches to digital storytelling, telling complex stories in an engaging way using a variety of text, video, and social media.
  • Be adept at technology, picking up new skills and adapting to the changing demands of a digital newsroom. Source and advocate for new technologies, software and story-telling approaches
  • Proven editorial judgement and flair, with a track record of making sound decisions on matters of editorial sensitivity quickly.
  • Knowledge of BBC editorial values, aims and objectives, and an ability to apply these to media development projects.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong editorial judgment and uphold good journalistic practice and principles.
  • Considerable knowledge of the state of global politics, with an extensive understanding of past and current affairs in Libya.
  • Experience working closely with external partners, and/or building, maintaining, and influencing high level external relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
