Background:
BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC. Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media. To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments around the world to produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues and strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure. Our work is focussed around four key themes: governance and rights, health, resilience, and humanitarian emergencies.
BBC Media Action requires a dynamic manager with solid project management and media experience to ensure the successful delivery and development of the BBC Media Action programmes in Libya, Tunisia & Algeria, working largely on media development and governance projects
Job purpose:
The Head of Operations will be responsible for all office operational logistics and technical services, under the direct supervision and guidance of the Country Director, ensuring effective operational and logistic support for all office activities, overseeing the management of office resources, and ensuring all office operations and processes meet BBC standards and values. The role requires a strategic thinker with strong office and people management skills who understands the development field. S/he needs experience working at a high level where diplomacy and good interpersonal skills are essential. The role also requires the ability to multi-task and handle complex and competing priorities.
This role is for an individual who already has the legal right to work in Tunisia.

Main duties:
- Operations:
- Provide leadership of the Operations Department, with overall responsibilities for logistics, IT, security, health and safety, physical infrastructure, equipment, business and compliance with all local regulations.
- Ensure effective operational and logistic support for office management, projects and production outputs.
- Liaise closely with all projects and technical teams so as to ensure efficient and effective use of resources and to maximise the impact of all project activities.
- Be directly accountable for large and/or high-risk administration tasks (high-value procurements; major activities and events; large or high-risk travel etc.), liaising with all internal departments involved to ensure that requirements are delivered on-time.
- Build and maintain relationships with relevant bodies in line with local requirements and BBC standards and protocols.
- Support professional development of all staff, including strengthening capacity, building skills and delegating authority to support professional growth.
- Safety & Security:
- Act as the lead person for occupational health & safety management of BBC Media Action North Africa office as per BBC health and safety guidelines and local legal requirements.
- Regularly review and update policy and planning documents related to health and safety, travel safety, travel security, international visitors and business continuity.
- Perform regular workplace safety assessments, combined with regular reviews of the safety and evacuation plan including earthquake plan and fire evacuation plan.
- Ensure that all accidents/incidents and near misses have been reported to the relevant BBC stakeholders in London and North Africa.
- Advise and support the Country Director and other senior staff to manage risk related to all aspects of our work.
- Ensure health and safety standards and gadgets are in place in the office.
- Maintenance of health and safety standards in relation to electrical wirings and fittings.
- Ensure the provision and maintenance of fire extinguishers, alarms and smoke detectors.
- Maintenance of security in the office, studio, gallery, equipment and vehicles.
- Monitoring of the office security services.
- Team management:
- Line manage IT & Facilities Officer and Resources Officer; supervise Technicians.
- Provide proactive, day-to-day support and guidance to administration staff and other teams on the operation of office processes, systems and policies.
- Provide training to new starters on office administration systems; and on-going support to team assistants, project coordinators and other staff working in administration roles within project teams.
- IT and Facilities:
- Supervision of the assets register, of the movement and location of equipment.
- Oversee routine maintenance and repair of equipment and assets.
- Handle service contracts with external suppliers and contractors for areas including utilities, security, equipment, telephone lines and the Internet Service Provider.
- Oversee running and functioning of information technology equipment including desktops, laptops, internet connectivity and general work stations.
- Monitor work spaces and office layout.
- Liaise with the London IT office re: networking system, online requirements etc.
- Supervise local purchases and procurement.
