Project: Recovering Populations of Sharks and Rays in the Gulf of Gabes Tunisia

Scope of Work: Awareness Campaign, Printing Materials, and Video Production

  1. Context

The Gulf of Gabes is renowned for its high biodiversity and productivity in the Mediterranean. It is an important nursery for elasmobranchs, where several species gather to mate and give birth, and offers suitable conditions for the growth of juveniles. More than 30 species of elasmobranchs are found here. Their abundance is threatened by illegal activities, which have led to a 40% drop in shark and ray landings in recent years.

As part of its mission to conserve endangered species and strengthen the livelihoods of local communities, mainly those involved in fishing, WWF N’A’s North Africa office is developing a project entitled “Restoring shark and ray populations in the Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia”. The main aim of this project is to implement conservation measures to reduce the threat of a possible decline in shark and ray populations in the Gulf of Gabes.

Through this project, WWF N’A will work to build the capacity and commitment of fishermen, local community members and authorities to promote shark conservation through a participatory approach. Scientific support will be provided to underpin conservation measures.

The expected results of the project are

– The development of recovery plans for two species (or one plan covering two species) while ensuring support by local stakeholders to guarantee their implementation;

– Identification of critical areas for spatio-temporal and technical fishing restrictions;

– Identification of alternative income opportunities or benefit systems to support the socio-economic aspect of fishermen who will give up targeted shark and ray fishing.

The national project partners are

-Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources

-Directorate General of Fisheries and Aquaculture

-Agricultural Extension and Training Agency

-National institute and technologies of the sea,

-Tunisian union of agriculture and fishing,

-Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas
